Yarn Along

This week I have been focusing on the legwarmers that I started a couple of weeks ago.  I usually knit with double pointed needles and I decided to try out the itty bitty circular needles for a change.  Especially since there is straight tube knitting.  So far they are okay.  I am not madly in love with them but I do not hate them.  What I like is that I am on circular needles.  What I do not like is that they are wood and I always prefer metal-I think stitches slide around better.  What makes my evaluation confusing is that the yarn I am using reynolds-wash-day-wool is very splitty to knit with.  I love this yarn because of its softness and its durability.  Wash Day wool wears like iron!!

For reading this week I am still on the same book, The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane and so far I am liking it a lot.  At the very beginning, on the first page, the author was talking about a character cooking lentils then eating the cooked peas (this stuck in my mind).....I thought peas and lentils are from the same family but two separate foods?  So after I got over her pea-lentil interchangeable description I fell into the story line.  Who cares?  I love lentils and I love peas :D  I am enjoying the mystery unfolding.

What are you knitting and reading this week?

  1. And I just wrote that I prefer wood to metal! Too funny!
Glad you were able to get into your story, but I understand the reference bothering you. I read Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books and there several mistakes in the series dealing with her shoe size; I know it's not important, but it bothers me.

  2. I don't like those tiny circulars because my hands are so big and the wood or metal bit seems so small. That said, I find DPNs so fiddly. I love your orange yarn. I'm off to ponder peas and lentils...

  3. I've never tried tiny circulars, but I am getting very into magic loop - saves worrying about having the right length of tiny circulars but still slightly easier than DPNs (which I do still use and enjoy). Loving the orange yarn of course ;)

I hate when a book says something that really takes me out of the story, like the peas vs lentils thing. Glad you got back into the story though!

  4. I am currently really liking my circular after those dpns! Gives me much less poking ;-)

  5. Ooh leg warmers, used to wear these at school in the 80's ;) I am still knitting my snood.

    Bee happy x
    Have a delicious day!

  6. I was just thinking as I read (and I see Tracey says the same!) that I prefer wood to metal… but in any case, those circular needles take a bit of getting used to, don't they? I am learning to love my DPNs, but they still always seem so clumsy to me… I also think they make my hands feel too big and the needles are so smalll and I end up knitting really close to my face for some reason, as if knitting on teeny-tiny needles makes everything about it teeny-tiny.

Anyway…I love that yarn. I'm sorry you're finding it splitty but it really is a beautiful colour. And something that wears like iron…oh, I could certainly use some of that, the way my kids are so hard on things! xo

  10. So tell me...is Dane nice or not in the book? One son's name is Dane, and he's extra special and nice so I don't know if I'd want to 'ruin' his name? :)

Those are some bright leg warmers! Great for color as we move into a gray winter.

  11. I love these legwarmers. I can't wait to knit some for my daughters.

  12. I love the small circular needles but also hate bamboo ones. I really like knitting with metal ones better and agree that the yarn slides better. Can't wait to see the finished knit!

  13. I have mixed feelings about tiny circulars too. And I almost always prefer metal for them as well. The knitting looks great... even if you are ambivalent!

  14. Lentils vs peas in a book like that would drive me to distraction!

What an awesome orange. :) Orange is one of those colors I seldom use, but I have some Cascade 220 that's destined to become a pumpkin at some point ...

  16. oh karen your legwarmers are going to be so pretty, i love that pattern. i've not made up my mind either on which i prefer, dpns or the small circular, i think it's dpns though. i too love metal addi lace is what i use for almost everything. except dpns, which crystal palace needles have my heart.

  17. I love that orange. I have always preferred wooden needles, but find myself lately grabbing my metal ones.

  18. Ooo, I love that pretty orange. I don't use metal unless I really have to - they hurt my hands for some reason.
Glad you're warming up to the book - despite the pea/lentil confusion. ;)

  19. I love small circular needles and wood needles as well. Though I'm always happily surprised when I switch to metal the the stitches just flow. Beautiful legwarmers and beautiful color!

  20. That yarn just screams "FALL" to me.

I generally use the magic loop method for anything I have to do in the round. This means breaking out my Knit Picks Aluminum needle set. I find I like to work with bamboo for slippery yarn and metal for yarn that I need to slide easily.

  21. My daughter is working on a pair of leg-warmers too! Love the color of yours!

  22. i love my addis for the slide too. and you know i can't stand the 16" circs but will knit socks 2 at a time on the 24" circs...just gives me a little more wiggle room without having dangling needles in the way. and orange. love.

  23. oh my that colour, so gorgeous, am loving it xx

  24. I have a love/hate thing with wood needles. Love the quiet, hate how they slow me down. :-) I love the color of your legwarmers!

  25. I enjoyed that book very much, I hope you will too! I have been spending a lot of time on you tube lately learning new stitches and stitching my thumb on my mitts, but what I didn't realize is all the fancy types of needles with removable circular tubes and such...I haven't been knitting long enough to know the benefits of one over the other yet. Though I will say I freak out every now and then that my yarn is going to slip off the dpns--anyway, just rambling here :). Can't wait to see the leg warmers when finished!

  26. Loving the colour. I think I prefer metal for splitty yarns, they just help the yarn slide along better I think?

  28. love the yarn color! too bad it's splitty. i didn't mention my current read in my post, but am reading 'the forgotten garden' by kate morton and really like it!

  29. Thanks for sharing your opinion of the tiny circulars. I really dislike DPNs, but am hesitant to spend *more* money on knitting needles. :) Great orange yarn!

  30. Quite a gorgeous color! Leg warmers sure do sound fun!

  31. I love that orange! I believe legwarmers should always be made in a happy color to counter the gloom of dark, cold days.

  32. Interesting that I'm not the only one struggling with circular needles...I always imagine that everyone is so competent.

The colour is amazing...perfect for this time of year and goes great with your header image...
