The Garden

It is HOT here.  Really really hot.  But I bet you already knew that.

In April we received three tiny trees from my sister and brother in law to plant.  One did not make it because our gardening negligence.  The five gallon bucket the saplings arrived in collected too much water during a couple of rain storms.  We planted all three trees hoping for the best.  The hawthorn and the crab apple (?) have decided to continue living.

This spot had a dogwood sapling and Frodo decided it was very dead and ripped it out of the ground.  He is an expert gardener!  He was so happy to have a twig (dead tree) to romp around the yard. Yesterday, we went out to fill in the empty spot.  After much deliberation, we chose a butterfly bush.  At our last house we owned, we had a screened-in porch surrounded by butterfly bushes. It was beautiful.  We loved how quickly they grew and enjoyed all the bees, butterflies, moths and hummingbirds that visited.

Our little vegetable patch is growing nicely. We planted tomatoes, basil, peppers cucumbers and a few kale.  So far the rabbits, ground hogs and deer are not interested in eating any of it.  Let's hope it stays that way.

  1. I love seeing your garden. I wish it were hot enough around here to grow peppers well. I have not had good luck with cucumber. I would love to have them though, they are a staple around here. blessings!

  2. Really great garden. My garden looks very healthy and robust...almost overgrown, but very little yield so far this year. We are still trying to figure out the best way to have a vegetable garden in this Arizona heat.

  3. The yard is looking good. I have lost quite a few plants through benign negligence. I applaud those who can grow things.

  14. It is sweltering in RI, too. We have a butterfly bush that my husband's grandmother planted many, many years ago ~ every season when he prunes it back I hold my breath that he doesn't kill it! ;) My niece used to love to run after all the butterflies when she was little ~ lots of good memories. Your gardens look wonderful!

  15. There was a butterfly bush in front of our porch when we first bought our home but it didn't survive through the 2010 winter. I was thinking along our driveway would be a good spot for them (I am constantly trying to figure out what to plant there!).

Your garden is looking quite lovely! And it is always nice to have a willing paw (or mouth? in this case) to help with the gardening tasks!

    Stay cool.
