Yarn Along

After all of the heat waves we have had in the early spring, it is cold now.  I even wore one of my wool sweaters two days ago because it was chilly.  I am not complaining, just reporting.  The chill in the air has renewed my interest in knitting this soft sparkly shawl.  Today I am on the ruffle!  I was powering through the pattern just to get to the ruffle which is the best part.  I am going to knit the ruffle until the yarn runs out.  That's the plan.  Yesterday I posted about my featherweight cardigan which has been getting equal knitting time.  I usually have three projects going on at the same time so maybe a pair of socks for my husband will make it on the needles this weekend! He is in desperate need of wool socks.  I don't know how he manages to work holes in the bottom of the socks but he does.  I still have my original pair of wool socks from over 12 years ago-not a hole to be seen!

The book The Story Sisters by Alice Hoffman is GOOD!  I am about half way through the book and I really do not care how it ends.  Hoffman is excellent at mapping out dysfunctional characters who you empathize for and with and yet dislike a great deal. I am definitely going to read more of her books based on how much I am enjoying this one.

  1. Love that orange colorway! My husband has a few pairs of handknit wool socks that he adores. I'm the one who manages to put holes in mine. I kill my Smartwool socks in usually one season (and they are in a rotation with 8-10 pair!)

  2. It was cold and you actually had to wear a wool sweater? I have really got to move!
My husband does something to his socks and wears holes in them too, maybe it's a guy thing.
I really do love the color of your yarn Karen, but then we both know I love all of your yarns. One day I would love to go yarn shopping with you so I could learn a few things.
Have a great yarn along day.

  7. Oh my....I don't know if my husband could be trusted with handmade wool socks at all! But as I have yet to conquer the art of knitting (though it is on 'the list') we don't have to worry about that just yet! Ahhh, but that lovely, sparkly yarn...I am so being pulled into shawl heaven!

  9. The sock holes truly puzzle me. My husband does the same thing, but they aren't really worn just holly. Good to know others have the same phenomenon. It has been in the lows 70s the past few days. I love it.

  10. We've had cold weather here too which is making me want to knit another shawl! I'm in love with all your yarns. I have a little yarn envy going on over here ;-)

  11. I always get holes int he bottom of my socks too. :( A good excuse for knitting new ones though. I love the color of the yarn and the little sparkles in it.

  12. It's gone chilly again here, too.
I think with socks it's about how many pairs you own/use - if you wore them everyday they'd soon wear out, I suspect. I knit my Mum some socks for Mothers Day and she loved them and wore them every evening and they wore away so much that she had to throw them out. Next time I shall present her with a pair for every day of the week so that she can space out the wear and tear!

  13. Happy ruffle knitting. Can't wait to see how gorgeous and sparkly the shawl ends up. My hubby is notorious for putting holes in socks. I think for that reason I'd never knit him a pair. Jacinta

  14. I'm not sure if my hubby would wear out socks. I've only finished one. Damn that second sock syndrome.

  15. Love that new banner. Your completed shawl is gorgeous. That book does sound very interesting. I love complicated characters in books. Sounds like your husband and mine use the same sock-wearing technique. That ruffle sounds fun.
It's bee chilly enough here that I contemplated turning on the heat-never did though-just used a blanket.
    Have fun knitting!

  20. It's gone cooler here too, just as my daughter and her boyfriend have gone off to a festival...they will come home covered in mud...but very happy in six days time...

I love the warm colour of your yarn. It goes with the name of your blog.

I don't remember reading anything by Alice Hoffman but you've wetted my appetite...for something that sounds a little like real life with unusual strong characters.

    Have fun knitting.

  27. Funny how our weather often seems so similar! We've had a strange day today with wool-sweater-cold in the morning and a lovely bright and sunny afternoon. It is getting cooler very quickly in the evenings, so it suits my knitting just right!

  28. The weather is crazy this year, isn't it? I wasn't the only one at my son's baseball game huddled in a blanket last night, brrr! Your pictures are so lovely, they make me want to learn to do something with yarn :-)

  30. hehe, yep, socks for the men! There is always a need for that. Mine runs through them because he has a very funny toe that keeps rubbing at the shoes.
That shawl will be a very pretty wear for sure!

  31. I'm loving the cooler temps we're having.

What sock pattern will you use for your hubby's socks? I'm looking for a good male wool sock pattern for my father-in-law.

  37. Here in the Pacific NW we've had a cool, wet spring, and although it's supposed to be in the mid-70s today, I wore my wool sweater on Saturday (and my dh lit a fire in our stove). Unlike you, I guess I'm complaining a bit... Eager for warmer weather, I guess. :) Your shawl looks to be a gorgeous one. Happy knitting! ~Lisa
