Reflections and Ornaments

The sun has been shining this past week nearly every day.  After two weeks of clouds from the hurricane, the sun lifted my spirits and made life seem back to normal.  I thrive on boring and normal.

As much as I love the time change in the fall, I find it difficult to squeeze in a walk with Frodo before sunset.  We walk after dinner and it feels weird to bundle up and walk before I start cooking. Can I tell you the knits I've been wearing this week since it's been a bundling kind of week?

I've finally worn my color affection shawl.  I loved knitting it but when it was off the needles I wondered would I like to wear it.  I'm here to say that I LOVED wearing it, it was very toasty warm and the best part was the wrong side looked just as beautiful as the right side.  I might have to make another one.   I've worn my fetching mitts nearly every walk and my wurm hat. Also this week I've worn hand knit socks.

Two days ago I started knitting some ornament stockings.  I haven't made a project page as of yet, it's on the to do list.  Here is a sneak peek of the wee little stockings.  Every time I knit one of these up, it reminds me of my mom, she knit one over 40 years ago. I think of her when I decorate the tree and I also think of the little mouse who bit a tiny hole in it.  I invented the pattern based on her ornament and knitting them gives me such joy.

I entered an Ornament Swap over at Christina Lowry Designs.  I'm excited to share an ornament but I'm even more excited to receive!!  Presents in the mail, how great is that?

Have a lovely weekend :)

  4. This is a beautiful post, Karen. So glad you are enjoying wearing your beautiful hand knits! My daughter has taken over my favorite hand knit hat....sigh. Also, love the stocking and so nice to hear about your memories of your mom knitting them, too. Have a great weekend!

  5. are you in my head???????!!!!!!!! I was merrily knitting along on my sockyarn hat (somewhat bored with it, though, although I know I'm going to love it) when I decided I really NEEDED to make a sock ornament---NOW. It will probably go with the AG doll stuff as her little Christmas stocking. I love yours!
And so glad you are having the sunshine---makes a huge difference! (Freddy and I have started walking after lunch---we're having the same after dinner 'issues' with the dark---he still runs for the door, though, every night when we close up the dishwasher!

  8. Karen, I think you knitting little stockings and thinking about your mom as you do is one of the nicest things I've heard. As I sit with needles and yarn I often think of my Nanny, she passed away when I was 15, but she was always doing some kind of needle work and I know she would be so proud of me for learning to knit.
I am now having to ride before I cook dinner and it feels odd. I do love getting off the time change, but my schedule is all messed up.
I hope you have a great weekend and the sun continues to shine.

  10. I love the honey colour Quince yarn in your shawl...it's nice to have things that are not only snugly and warm but pretty too. Looking forward to seeing what you get in your ornament sway...

    Happy weekend.

  11. It is pretty weird to get the boys out for a walk before it gets dark. Hubby put red flashing bicycle lights on their harnesses for the after dark walks. It helps since they are both black.

  15. Glad that you have had some sunshine. Always lifts the spirits. Lovely to hear you are wearing all your lovely hand knits. It is cool enough here at the moment to still wear woollens. Although we are getting the odd warmer day. Hope you have a gorgeous weekend ahead of you. Jacinta

  17. It's been gloomy here too, so it's a joy to see some sun, and how better to enjoy it than walking with the dog bundled up in some hand knits to keep the cold out. In fact I'm bundling up right now as I'm off to the beach with the whippets.

  18. Oops, that makes it sounds as if the dog's wearing the knitted things and not me!

  20. I'm a bit of a hibernator by nature so I'm rather excited over the change in the season... then again I say that about every season! Love the stocking ornament!! What a skill to be able to dream up a pattern based on a memory, tapping into all of that knit knowledge you've stored over the years. Someday I want to be a 'mature' knitter like that. :)

    Blessings, Debbie

  21. Those stockings are so cute. By the time I get inspired to do those things I run out of time. Maybe I will try for just a few this year.
