Weekends

This weekend was relaxing and I had a huge epiphany.  You know the kind that just stops you in your tracks.  I was knitting madly yesterday on socks for my daughter and made such significant progress, but you see it came at a cost.  Both of my forearms are hurting.  Especially my left arm-so, I am easing up on my self imposed (prison) goals.  I value my knitting time that continues to be my inexpensive therapy for when I dabble in anxiety.

Today I did not knit all day until meeting friends for knitting.  Even then I took it easy.  I am also having a mild flare up of my arthritis so I'm hoping that in a few days I will be good as new.  Until then, I am NOT knitting three pairs of socks for Christmas day.  One pair seems doable.  In over thirty years of knitting I have manage to not be sidelined by a knitting injury, I aim to keep my lucky streak going.

My husband cooked dinner today so after knitting I had delicious curry and then tackled the dishes.  My chores for today are done.  I even managed to wrap up some presents!!  On Wednesday our son will be home!

It has been drizzly and drippy outside all day long.  If only it was ten degrees colder we could be looking a flakes...

How was your weekend?

  1. Oh yes! Take it easy my dear! I was diagnosed with horrible tendentious once after a tad too much hand embroidering. Learned my lesson and will never push through again! Your weekend sounds sweet and simple and curry for dinner??? Yum!

  2. I knit my way through yesterday afternoon and some mindless TV. My shoulder has been bothering me (maybe a torn rotator cuff) so I want to get some knits done before I go to the Dr. I agree, you shouldn't knit yourself into an injury. Hope your arthritis flare up is over soon!

  4. Dearest Karen, I hope you are taking care of yourself, not being able to knit would have me in tears. I can't knit one pair of socks, let alone three in just three weeks! My boy's cooked dinner tonight for me so I feel like I am on vacation.

  5. Oh no Karen, you take care. Glad you were able to rest up over the weekend. It is really cold here but all the snow went south of us ;(

  6. you really don't want to mess yourself up.....you might want to try some hand exercises

my yoga instructor makes a point every session of making me do this awful hand-thing that I'm sure is going to break my wrists, but actually makes them feel great afterwards (didn't that make me sound very zen....my yoga instructor....??? I'm the worst one in the class by far and really only there to keep MY arthritis in check!!!)

  9. Love your snowmen! When I taught school, I collected snowmen. But I only put them out in January. My grade-mate teacher put out penguins so our hallway was *icy cold* till February warmed our hearts. :)

Take care of yourself, keep that 30 year winning streak going!!!

  10. I agree - one pair of socks is plenty - especially when it means looking after your most important knitting tools. :) Sounds like you had a lovely weekend - I bet the curry was delish! :) Hope you feel 100% better very soon!

  11. Be careful!! A few weeks ago my elbow was hurting horribly. I realized it was due to my knitting like a mad woman to keep my knitting deadlines (all self imposed!). I gave it a rest for a bit and now it's fine. Scared me for a bit though. I don't know what I'd do without my knitting!!

  12. Oh no! So glad you took the sign and rested. A knitting injury would be tragic. Socks are a great gift anytime not just at the holidays. I am sure your recipients would just love having you there. How exciting for your kiddos to return. Are you ready for the noise and mess :)

  13. Glad that you are giving your body a rest. Only a couple days until you get to see your son- how exciting!!

  14. You are doing the right thing. When I knit too many socks I start to feel it in in my hands and my forearms. I need to take a break or I'm afraid of what damage I might do. So far I have been lucky. I still need to finish two more pairs of socks, but I'm knitting on size 2's instead of 1's which seems to help. Christmas knitting has sort of become one of my traditions, but I can tell you that will change right quick when it starts to take a toll on my body!

  16. Relax those hands and arms! I'm glad you are relaxing your self imposed knitting goals. It's no fun when it's no longer comfortable, is it?

  17. yes! yes! you must relax and not worry so much about deadlines. process not product ;-)

  18. I am a fellow arthritis sufferer so know what you mean. Don't get overwhelmed with all your Christmas projects! Enjoy your week.

  19. Oh poor thing Karen...I hope your arms are much better now.

I'm never going to be able to make all the socks that I promised Hannah this year either. I love the idea I read somewhere, (maybe here?) I'm not sure where, that someone's mum would put a little sample of wool and note of things not quite finished but in process in her Christmas cards, to let the recipient know that although she hadn't quite managed to make her gift in time, she was working on it and something was coming later. I'm starting on the longest pair that she has asked for and I will learn from your experience and try to be happy with giving her one pair (maybe two max) and then she will have the others to look forward to on cold January days.

Lovely that your son is home tomorrow, the holidays will really begin then when everyone is home. That's the best bit of all.

The sky outside looks full of snow...I'm sure it's going to snow today...and maybe we'll have a white Christmas...I better get the tree before we get snowed in.
    Happy days.

  20. I had some tendonitis in my left wrist, but it's better now. I had to take a break too. My oldest comes home at the end of this week and we'll put the tree up then. He begged that we not put the tree up until he came home...that made me happy.

  21. Wow. A knitting injury! Maybe that's why I don't knit as much as I want to. I tend to get really tight shoulders after a while. I never understood why people find it relaxing.... Then again, I"m still technically a beginner.
