Walk with Me

I am lucky to to be surrounded by trees and woods. I have wild roses blooming and they're beautiful.  The fragrance is mild and sometimes I catch a whiff of loveliness.  The wild blackberries are nearly finished blooming and in a month it will be picking time. Unfortunately the berries are quite bitter and need lots of sugar, well maybe that isn't so bad. A couple years ago my son and husband made ink out of them.  It worked but it was a faded ink.  I think the fun was all about the gathering.

Yesterday the rain arrived and it was a drippy drizzly day.  The plants and flowers needed the moisture so I enjoyed the change of weather.  This spring for me has been a cool low humidity one-my hair loves it!  Unfortunately my husband has not been in the pool yet because it has been too cold. I am sure the hot weather will be here in no time at all.  I'll wilt and he will bask.

Our vegetable garden is in.  We scaled back on the tomato and pepper plants this year.  We added spinach and lettuce and a nifty fence to keep the rabbits out.  Maybe later we'll add some kind of cabbage family plant.  Kale??  I love thwarting the pests with the fence.  I feel like a sinner with those vindictive thoughts.

See that fence??  So far so good.  No one has climbed under or scaled over.

Have a lovely weekend!

  1. Your garden looks very nice. I have seen a little cottontail rabbit in the back yard, but he hasn't discovered my veggie garden yet. He makes me think of Peter Cottontail.

  4. It all looks so lovely Karen. A perfect walk. The feather is such a pretty one I haven't seen one like that before. I've just planted vegetables in pots this year as spring has been so cold. June has been a lovely month, sunny with a cool breeze. Have you thought of planting Swiss chard. It's so pretty with red or yellow stalks and dark green leaves. Lovely on pizza. Your blackberries are very early we don't get ours until Autumn...we know the summer's ending when the bushes begin to fruit.
    Have a lovely weekend

  6. I wish the humidity was low here, my hair is a mess! We have been experiencing our first tropical storm of the season and my power has been in and out all day, such a pain.
I love your garden. One day I hope to have marked out beds, but for now I must be content with a garden that could feed a third world country, Mike always gets a little carried away.
I hope your weekend is a fun one. Me? I think I am finally feeling well enough to tackle some cleaning out, my home needs it.

  8. I see that fence, but how do you get in to work on the garden or harvest? We are having problems with groundhogs and all kind of pests. I enjoy your photography.

  9. I love blackberries. We don't have them nearby. When my brother lived in the Pacific Northwest his backyard had tons of bushes. I made all kinds of blackberry goodness. The earlier I picked the more tart they were, but if I waited then I had to compete with birds.

  10. Nice photos! We maintain that blackberries are the infrastructure of our Evergreen state! We have them in our backyard, and they'd like to take over everything if they only could.

  17. Your garden looks great! I think greens tend to grow well--little fuss. I am jealous of your blackberries! Reminds me of one of my favorite poems, by Seamus Heaney, "Blackberry Picking." Happy summer to you!
