Yarn Along

Because there are two books in the photo, you might be thinking I'm reading both.  Well sort of... I started The Last Time I Saw You by Elizabeth Berg and the story is not keeping me interested.  I'm going to give it a few more pages and decide whether or not to continue.  Yesterday morning, I started The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner.  Rumor has it that this novel is his best work,  I'll let you know what I think after I've read a fair portion of it.  I've been sad (sigh) since finishing Fault in our Stars by John Green-it was an excellent novel and I highly recommend it, if the topic of cancer does not stress you.

Oh my knitting-I am quickly approaching chart c which is the final chart of my lovely shawl.  Each row is pure pleasure to knit and I'll be lonely when I bind off the stitches.  I started a pair of mitts yesterday on a whim, the pattern is Jo March Mitts.  Looks like a fun pattern from what I've skimmed over.  I'm using some Cascade 220 from my stash.  I can have pretty new accessories for when fall arrives ;)

What are you knitting and reading this week?

  1. Oh my sister recommended "Fault in our Stars" the other day. It's waiting for me at the library! I can't wait to begin. I love the color of the mitts. I want to make myself some mittens for this coming winter. Cascade 220 might be the yarn to make them in too!

  2. I usually like Elizabeth Berg, but I seem to remember this one didn't catch me, either! Oh, thinking fall and mitts!!! I can't quite get past 90 degrees!!! (good small summer knit, though!!! good choice!)

  3. Cancer does upset me, but I've heard such good things about Fault In Our Stars, that I think I'll have to try it. I can't wait to see your finished shawl--I love the color. I hate to think about fall coming, but it would be nice to have some warm accessories to wear. : )

  4. I have been wanting to read Fault in Our Stars, but since my friend,Sandy, passed away I think I need to wait a little while.

I just love your shawl Karen and want to knit one just like it. We can be twins far away, okay?

  5. love the mitts pattern and that yarn is gorgeous, I've just been admiring some similar lovet coloured Madeline Tosh yarn on another yarn along blog. It's nice to prepared for the changing seasons.

I'm knitting a tie at the moment and still reading Salmon fishing in the Yemon.

    Happy knitting

  6. I read Little Women with the kiddos recently. I think the older two would like mitts like those - especially because of the name. Now that I have a new library card, I will have to check out your recommendation.

  7. I've gotten myself hooked on vintage mysteries by the (once famous) Ross MacDonald. I don't stay up and watch the news anymore with Brad, which is great, because I'd much rather read than see the news!

  8. I only give a book a short amount of time before I switch to another one. I am not very patient. I'm not sure if I can read "Fault in the Stars". As always, your knitting looks beautiful.

  9. I really ought to read Faulkner someday! I have yet to do so. :)

  10. I need to get back into my "knitting groove". Not that I haven't been knitting (four pairs of socks for family while we were in Germany), but I need to find myself a really nice project again. On the other hand, I have been reading more than usual - mainly German books and magazines I picked up during our stay. :-)

  12. I've been making mittens this week, too.
Thanks for another great book recommendation! I don't know how you manage to read two fiction books alongside each other - I end up intertwining the stories accidentally!
I love what you said about being lonely once a project is finished. What a lovely way of putting it!

  14. Love the mitts pattern - I added it to my ravelry favorites because I am planning on deciding on a pattern for MYSELF this year - I can't remember the last time I knit (and finished) something for my own use besides a dishcloth...this one will be in the runnings!

Oh your shawl is breathtaking, the color, the pattern... it looks completely soft and drapy, just what a shawl should be.

  15. I recall The Sound and the Fury with good nostalgia. I had that copy in the photo. I like that you aren't going to continue reading what hasn't gripped you. There's too much out there to enjoy, non? Like a bad pattern, why torture yourself for what you love? I am in between reads, and though I said we shouldn't torture ourselves, I might give that Raising Cain parenting book one more crack, before I return it to my friend, before starting my next adventure... Happy reading & knitting!

  16. It's too hot to think of knitting mitts! Which is funny because I've put a sweater in my queue for C and I'm not starting that anytime soon either.

  17. I love popping around to see what everyone has on their needles and you never disappoint Karen! I love you choices in pattern and colour. The shawl is going to be beautiful.

  18. No knitting for me this week, well, unless I count the dishcloth I made the other evening. I have a couple of projects lined up, a bag and a wrap, but can't decide whether to start one of those or finish that darned poncho that's been hanging around so long it's getting on my nerves.

I love those mitts! I so wanted to be Jo when I read Little Women as a child.

  19. I love the fact that we have such similar taste in reading.

I'm dying to read The Fault in Our Stars. I wasn't ready to read it so soon after Me Before You, though. So, maybe the next time I go to the library.

  20. It's been so long since I read The Sound and Fury....over 25 years, but I recall enjoying it. Love the cable in those mitts. They will be a great addition to the fall wardrobe.

  21. Jo March! From Little Women? I do love Faulkner, but The Sound and the Fury is not my favorite (though this isn't to discourage you from reading it--it is great!). I think the all-time greatest is one of his earlier ones: Flags in the Dust. But I also really loved Absalom, Absalom! I had a whole course on Faulkner when I was in college, and it was great fun. I am still reading Dostoevsky and plugging away on one million little projects, but I am for sure going to get back to my knitting as soon as I've got a good movie to set up while I'm working. Gives me something to look up at every now and again. :) Happy knitting and reading!
