Yarn Baskets

I store all of my "pretty" yarn in baskets that way I can see what I have and inspiration can flow easily in my brain.  I do have much much more yarn stored away in a closet, but that is for another post.  Today I thought you could peek at my collections.  The above photo is my worsted weight in wool.

This photo is alpaca skeins in mostly fingering weight but there are a few worsted weights tucked underneath.  As you can see, I have a love of green going on.

The bottom basket is sock weight yarn and the top basket is lace weight alpaca.  I've shown the fingering weight wool basket in this post. Sigh, if only I could knit all day and all night, that would be so much fun!

This was my mother's yarn basket, I've kept it in the family room by my side table.  There are a few more skeins of yarn that were gifts.  I'm still mulling over what they want to be when they are knit up.

Do you display your yarns?  How so?

  1. Love your yarns--thanks for giving us a peek! My "pretties" are on a bookshelf, the rest is in two big cardboard boxes, with oddments and leftover bits in a glass vase. I'm looking forward to playing with it and rearranging it all when we move. :)

  2. Ohh I'm drooling!! I used to have my yarn out in the craft room. Until Ree kept deciding she thought she could knit and use whatever yarn she wanted. Now it's tucked away safely in a plastic bin!

  3. What a fun way to keep track of your yarn. I worry about moths, so I keep most of my yarn in plastic bins. Then there are the UFOs........

  4. What a gorgeous stash of yarn--treasure basket after treasure basket! (And there's more in a closet??) I don't display my yarn, but only because I don't have any place to do it. I think it is a fabulous idea, 0ne that would definitely encourage me to use what I have on hand. (Sometimes I forget about that beautiful hank of yarn I bought and put away.)

    Loved this post!

  5. All of my yarns (except what I'm using) are on shelves in the bedroom. Locked away from all the cats. It may not be pretty, but it's safer that way. (:

So. You have a thing for alpaca, I see. (:

  6. I love this idea of using yarn as decoration for inspiration!!! Right now, most of my yarn is boxed up, but I hope some day to have it beautifully displayed like you do.

  7. While I'd love to use baskets, we have moths & carpet beetles. Instead, I have several large apothecary jars I use to display yarn.

  8. Beautiful yarns in your baskets. I love the sock yarns peeking out the side. Most of my Yarns-in-Wating are kept in the craft room closet. WIPs are by my chair in a set of basket/shelves where they can yell "work on me next". :-)

  9. Lovely yarns! I would love to display mine, and actually have been seriously considering setting aside a place in the office to do so, but then I am reminded of a certain yarn obsessed feline. Ah well.. :)

  10. I went through this post saying "ooohh ahhhh". I love all the yarn! I have yarn hidden. My husband don't like to see any of it laying around :( But I do have one basket by the computer I keep with a little bit of fiber for some inspiration.

  11. That's a very nice system for keeping your yarn. I have all of mine shoved into baskets - no sorting of any kind. Maybe I should have them organized a bit better...

  13. My coffee table has a big glass insert and a lower level. I keep baskets of yarn on the lower level and they can be seen through the glass. All of my sock yarn is there and some other special ones. It's nice to keep the sock yarn so handy and fun to look at, too.

  14. I am loving your yarn baskets! It looks like you and I like the same colors! The only thing that gets displayed really is my current project. With two cats I don't dare leave my yarn out.

  16. I have one big basket with my WIPs and yarns that I want to use soon. My sock yarn is in a cart with drawers in it. My hand spun is in a big sweater bag, unless I know I am going to use it shortly then I keep it out.

The basket your mom had must be so special to still have!

  17. wow! That is a serious stash! I also use baskets.... one big one and 2 small ones. UNfortunately, our house is so small that they are crammed into a corner and not especially easy to view.... although if they were, my children would probably constantly be making a mess of it!

  18. Mine are kept in a large basket. I have the pile that I never really quite get around to using and instead purchase new. I really need to use up what I have...

  19. I love your baskets! I have mine in fabric-lined ones like yours--I just love them. You have so many pretty yarns! I imagine it's inspiring just to walk in the room and lay eyes on them. I would want to come on a knitting retreat at your house!

  20. Be still my heart! Oh, those baskets of wool are the stuff of dreams. I store my wool up high, so little hands don't get in to it! Though my stash is much humbler in size than yours. :)
