Bulky Cowl Yarn Along

This week I'm working on a cowl that I posted about here, it's with bulky wool and the knitting is not going as fast as one would expect.  I think it's because the wool is so thick :)  Anyways, it's my night time mindless knitting project and my daughter is going to love the finished project.  To offset the bulky wool I cast on another sockhead hat with leftover sock yarns I found in my basket while I was rearranging my wools.  I hope I'm not the only one that rearranges wool and see the bits and ends of previous projects. I love strolling down knitting memory lane.  So while I am knitting my cowl, I am having a torrent  emotional affair with the fingering weight wool project.  Keeps me quite happy!

I continue to read Dear Life by Alice Munro.  The short stories are perfect for this month.  Nice sized pieces for a wondering mind with too much to do during the holidays.  Her stories are unexpected and her characters are delightful.

What are you knitting and reading this week?

  3. Oh, you are so right about wandering minds at this time of year! I'm knitting a shawl with fingering yarn at the moment wishing it were thicker and tweedier (I'm thinking Brooklyn Tweed) to match the season!

    Happy Wednesday to you.

  4. I love the chunky cowl! It is something I have been thinking about starting for a while, but wasn't sure how it would work. I haven't used much thick wool before.

  5. Rest assured, you are not the only one rearranging their stash. ;-) My only "system" in my stash is the fact that I keep "leftover" yarn (not whole skeins) separate from the rest. I do dream of a nicer way to store and "display" my stash, because everybody wants to look at yarn, right? ;-) One day...

  6. I think really thick yarn is super hard to knit with sometimes. I just made a slew of knitted ball ornaments for our tree, and the hardest one was the one I knit from leftover super bulky yarn. Your cowl is lovely though!

  7. I'm quite shocked about you and that bulky cowl, hahaha! just joking! your fingers will be so happy when the project is done and it's back to small needles... the colour of the cowl is gorgeous! love greys!

  8. i'm doubting my loyalty to my long-ish book right now...so many distractions...like maybe I need to cast on a sockhead hat!!! :)

  9. I just bought some super thick yarn for an upcoming project. I was hoping it would go along quickly but not likely, huh?

  10. I think it's funny how it's harder to make progress on thicker yarns sometimes, but fingering and lace weight can fly... our minds are such fickle things!

  13. cowls made of bulky yarn are the best, it's so windy here that cowls and scarves are the only way to go :)

  14. I'm also reading a book with nine short stories. Yeah, I can handle that during this busy time of year. HA!

  15. I do the same thing, Karen. It's nice to take a stroll down memory lane.

    Loving both projects so far.

  16. I like having several different projects on the go, in different weights as well. It does seem like there's a need to have something fine to outweigh the bulky!
And I love my little bits of leftovers, they are fun to go through. Sometimes I have a hard time using them up just because I like to see them in my basket!

  17. Oh, I love rearranging and petting my yarn...
Thanks for the book suggestion, I've put it on my list! (it's almost as long as my 'to make' list :-))
    Your projects look great!

  18. I have found that the thicker the yarn, the more it is like knitting with tiny needles. Slowwww. It also hurts my hands! The color is lovely though!

  19. I made the Gaptastic and thought my daughter would like it, but she wanted to make her own and she did and get lots of compliments on it! Great choice! Really like the hat color and pattern...May have to try that for fireside project!

  25. I recently made a similar cowl for my daughter, only I used a dk- because she very specifically requested a dark charcoal with flecks of light in it. It was seed stitch and it seemed to take forever! I think it is all that back and forthing. But I do love seed stitch! A very gratifying cowl to make for gifting this time of year is the Drop Stitch Cowl (on ravelry) It is a free pattern made with one skein of lion brand Thick and Quick on size 15 circs. It takes about two hours to make the whole thing and it is adorable. I have made 6 for all the nieces and my daughters. It feels great to have a cupboard full of finished knits! Happy knitting and reading today!

  27. Two very pretty projects to keep your knitting interesting. All I seem to touch right now is fingering weight, which I love.

  28. How lovely! It just looks so soft and cozy:) I have just started Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall, after having it on my Kindle for months and months. So far, I really like it!
