Tea and Jam Shawl

This week I have been feverishly knitting away on a shawl that is addictive.  The design is simple and easy to memorize and the construction allows a knitter to knit until the yarn runs out.  That kind of shawl knitting is the best.  One more row has been my mantra and still there is yarn galore!  The wool was bought at a fiber festival many years ago and originally intended for a pair of socks for my husband.  I changed my mind because he is hard on socks so now I only knit with dedicated sock yarn with a nylon blend for maximum life span.  Speaking of socks, he needs more pairs....soon after the shawl, right?

Currently I'm reading two books, the one in the photo- The Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline is excellent.  The ending is not far for me and the story has me savoring every single word.  It is a must read book and I haven't finished reading it!  My other book is on my ipad and is borrowed from the elibrary.  Blowing on Dandelions by Miralee Ferrell is a gentle easy read and I've paired this book with my frantic knitting during the daytime.

What are you knitting and reading?

  1. The shawl is coming along nicely. I have one that I have recently picked back up and I realized that I didn't have much more to go. "One more row" is my mantra even when I know I should go to bed or change out the laundry. The book sounds very good. I'll have to check it out!

  5. So you, too, are knitting in blue. Can't wait to see it finished. Thanks for the book recommendations, Karen. :)

My knitting consists of working my way through my ufo's and is going quite smoothly. I've been updating Ravelry, but just couldn't get my act together to do a yarn along post this week.

  7. I am ashamed to say that I have a pair of socks on the go that I cast on over a year ago! I have many pairs of handknit socks and they are my absolute favourite - but I can't say I enjoy the process very much, I usually shoot through the first sock and then it takes forever and a day to complete the second LOL.

Are you keeping this shawl or is your lucky daughter going to inherit it :)

  8. That's such an amazing name for a shawl. I can't make socks with pure wool either because I'm so heavy on them too. That's what I'm making at the moment, and still reading about Livingstone. Like you I'm really enjoying it, so I'm savouring the pages...fortunately there are a lot of them!

  24. That blue is beautiful! Thanks for the tips about yarn for socks- the speed at which thw few pairs I have made got holes has deterred me from trying many times but this year I decided to knit more of them!

  25. I love that blue yarn. I have been wanting to read The Orphan Train for quite some time but my library doesn't have it and I always forget to order it from another when I get home. I have to get on that.

  28. I am ready for a nice gentle read, especially after reading Wild! I saw that you commented on it over at my blog...just want to warn you that it does have language and adult situations which could be offensive. I just want you to know in case you do decide to seek it out.

  31. Can't wait to see the finished shawl -- your projects are always an inspiration to me. I keep seeing Orphan Train here and there on the internet; perhaps it is a sign. Dang it! Not one month into 2014 and I already have a "to-read" list a mile long! (what a terrible problem, right? ;-) )
