Currently on the Needles

My knitting and reading this week are both new, oh sweet joy!  I am on my last cowl for holiday knitting and I think I just might knit one for myself.  Maybe.  This yarn is malabrigo sock but I'm not too sure of the colorway.  I want to say rayon vert (yup just checked).  I've had this in deep stash and the tags were not attached. I continue to knit my own version of grey loop cowl, the pattern is burned into my memory.

My novel this week is The Mathematician's Shiva which I picked up while in Cambridge, MA.  The back summary was interesting and funny.  As you know, my son is in graduate school for mathematics.  I do like the abundant dialogue that was absent from my last novel (the signature of all things).  And the ease of reading.  So fingers are crossed that I picked a good one.

What are you knitting and reading this week?

  1. I love both your knitting and reading this week! The colors in the Malabrigo are great and The Mathematician's Shiva has been on my list since spring so I also have my fingers crossed that it's a good one. Happy reading and knitting!

  3. Beautiful yarn! I haven't read that book, but it's awesome that your son studied mathematics at college. :)

  4. I just finished a pair of socks, also with Malabrigo Sock yarn. I am still knitting my little socks, but don't seem to make any real progress on them. I am not sure yet what I will cast on next, either a pair of mitts or a hat. My reading has been very slow these last few weeks (maybe even months) I started Orange is the new Black a while ago. I like it but I haven't really been attached to the story, so it's the same here as with the knitting, no real progress. There is just too much other stuff to do at the moment...

  5. That's a really interesting-sounding book - hope it carries on well!

Lovely, lovely yarn, such a gorgeous colour. It's such a nice feeling when you can just pick something up and work on it without having to concentrate too hard or worry about finding where you were in the pattern!

  7. A new book and a new project on the needles, life is good ;)
You are knitting your last Christmas cowl? You are really on the ball for the season Karen. I need to sit down and see what I have in my stack and then I'll see how I've done for the year.
    Have a great day.

    1. Are you on ravelry? pick out what you think is easy and you like the looks of it and shoot me a message over there, I'll help if I can.

If you are still on straight needles, you could find a scarf pattern that you like and knit it to 65 inches (give or take) then sew the two ends together and poof you've got yourself a cowl!!!

  11. Beautiful pattern and yarn...love the rich color.

  12. I was always good at math but didn't enjoy it. Not sure I would ever pick up a book with "math" in it's title. LOL. I just stopped reading The Lemon Tree because there wasn't enough dialogue - it read too much like a history book.

  20. I love the colourway of that Malabrigo sock yarn. I still have some leftover Malabrigo sock from my Color Affection and I'm thinking of giving it away, I love the yarn but I feel having worked with these colours for so long I'm somehow done with them.
How awesome that you finished your gift cowls, yay for you!! :)

  29. That is a very pretty cowl! So how many have you made? Maybe you could take a photo of the whole bunch to see what they look like in different colors? I am working on a Christmas stocking at the moment and reading A Damgerous Fortune by Ken Follett.

  31. That yarn will make a great cowl. Right now I'm in love with my Turn a Square hat. I'm just worried about running out of scrap yarn, but I can't tell and I can't stop. No books are cracked right now ...

  32. Such pretty colors in the yarn. I'm sure it will be a beautiful cowl. Great job on your holiday knitting!

  33. I like your book selection. I must try it. Both Hubby and I have our Master's degrees in Mathematics and our daughter majored in math at Boston College. She is an Actuary now. Good luck to your son. I can't believe you are so far along with your holiday knitting. I have been stalled and I only have one item planned. I love the colorway of the cowl you are working on.

  34. Thank you, thank you for posting your notes ;) I will be using them for a cowl for my knitter daughter for the holidays (once I finish the wonder years sweater for Kaleb!)
My niece Shannon is a math major at URI ~ we were just talking Saturday night about all the wonderful applications a math degree hold! As she is in the thick of it right now in her coursework I think she was only half appreciating our enthusiasm! She's a natural though, and loves numbers. :) God bless them!

    1. I did enjoy it Yanic, my son is majoring in math in grad school so I bought the book because we could share it. Once he reads the novel I'm sure we will have some interesting discussions!
