Currently on the Needles

I finished reading  Fever 1793 and quite enjoyed it!  There is nothing like a yellow fever epidemic to entertain you.  Seriously though...the book was a quick read and I am surprised I haven't read it as of yet.  So sticking with my epidemic theme I'm onto the Plague in this book titled A Year of Wonders: A novel of the plague.  I bought this book before my son lent me his book so I guess we have similar interests.

My knitting....has been challenging.  I started the featherweight cardigan which I've knit many times and should have been an easy soothing knit before the wedding.  Well, I guess I flaked out and did some creative increasing and my numbers were off on both sleeves and one front.  So I ripped out the entire sweater (I was half way to the armholes..) and started it all over again.  I knew I would not be happy with mistakes.

What are you knitting and reading this week?

  2. I told Alex about Fever 1793 and he wants to read it, thank you. I have the hardest time trying to keep up with the rate this boy goes through books.

  4. Ack- I hate ripping back, but I have done it enough on my stitch block cowl I should be used to it. I'm going to put Fever 1793 on my goodreads queue!

  5. Bummer about having to rip back the cardigan, but better that, than being unhappy with it later on. The books sound really interesting, thanks for the recommendations.

  6. Bummer having to rip back! But you're right, sometimes the mistakes are so great that they'd make us enjoy the FO less. Glad you enjoyed your book! I'm hoping to finish some reads-in-progress before a new one I preordered comes out this month-fingers crossed!

  7. Oh no! Good for you for restarting; I would have fudged the numbers and then grumped about it for the whole life of the sweater ;) It's a beautiful color!

  9. Geraldine Brooks is one of my favorite authors. I can't wait for her next book to come out! Have you read Caleb's Crossing? I listened to it as an audiobook, which I would recommend. Great narration.

  10. Sorry about the sweater, but if you wouldn't be happy with it, it had to be done.

  11. I would have done the same thing Karen. It would have made me crazy through the entire knit.

  12. Both those books are now on my reading list.
Good for you for the brave frogging. It is so hard to rip out so much knitting! I tend to wait far too long to admit that a project is doomed!

  13. I really enjoyed Year of Wonders. My book group read it and we had an interesting discussion. I enjoy Geraldine Brooks' writing. The color of the Featherweight is so pretty. It is hard to rip out so much knitting but you will be happier in the end. When I do that, I remind myself I'm just getting more entertainment and value out of the yarn. I am reading a little lighter fare these days, "Garment of Shadows" a Laurie King mystery. I cast on an Ishbel shawl from stash yarn and am working on a pair of "So Simple Sock Garden" socks for my daughter-in-law for Christmas.

  14. I always feel better when I just decide to rip it back and go for it. I love the color you're using, it's going to look really beautiful at the end!

  15. Your featherweight is going to be gorgeous; I love that color. Good for you for biting the bullet and ripping; if you wouldn't be happy in the end, it's worth the pain. I loved Year of Wonder. After that you need to read Dooms Day Book by Connie Willis. Still the plague with some time travel thrown in! I just finished Sycamore Row by John Grisham.

  16. shame you had to rip back, but you gotta do what you gotta do, and ultimately I bet you will be so glad you did! the books you've read/reading sound absolutely fascinating! I will have to look them up, are they historically accurate do you know? I like to learn with a quick easy read (super lazy!) if I can :D jenny xx www.prettycolumn.co.uk

  18. Ugh I hate the rip back, but I understand why. It would drive us all crazy. Anyways, I know the speed at which you knit. You'll be done before you or we know it!

  20. Such a shame to have to start over but I have no doubt your needles will be on fire and you will have redone it before I catch up with everyone. Love the yarn, stunning colour.
