Salads, Reading and Knitting


These days have been predictable and comforting.  In a few weeks my husband's job will be more flexible and that means we can go out and about and do 'things'.  Since late last August, we've been juggling a crazy stressful schedule.

Can you believe we are nearly half way through May?  Where does the time go?  The past two weeks, I've focused on improving my health.  I've been walking daily unless it's raining and after a physical therapy consult, I've been doing assigned exercises for my back.  I hope in time I'll be able to return to yoga, but for now, these exercises make me feel proactive and healthy.



I'm eating a salad a day every single day.  Phew.  That is quite a goal!  I have to confess, it was bumpy start.  The devil foods were calling my name over and over.  However, feeling healthy after eating a salad wins out in the end.  I feel kind of crappy if I eat garbage food.  Doesn't everyone?  And yet we go back to eating garbage again and again.

On a whim, I dropped into the local library and picked up a poetry collection by Mary Oliver.  The library has an area where unwanted magazines are left for free for others.  I picked up some issues of the New Yorker!  Sweet.  Over the weekend, I plan to sit and read them over a cup of tea.

So far The Handmaid's Tale is an enjoyable book, I'm not overly upset by the subject matter.  I'm almost half way through, so let's hope nothing crazy happens.   If it does, I'll switch to reading this only in the daytime and not right before I go to bed.


My baby sitting job is going well, the Little Miss is liking me more and well, how can I not like a one year old?  She is the sweetest little girl.  I frequently remember long ago memories of being a young mom and wonder how did I do it without any family help?  We lived far away from any support system so it was all up to me.

While watching her yesterday, I heard a song played on the Disney channel one too many times and it's now stuck in my head.  Those are the pitfalls of little ones.  Silly jingles!  When my kids were little it was Barney the dinosaur songs that permeated my brain...


My mission today while shopping is to find a pair of sandals that are sturdy yet stylish.  Wish me luck because when I go out with a specific item to purchase, I end up with zilch.  I'm trying to go with an open mind and a wide budget.  I'm picky about shoes and the RA and narrow feet are a challenge..


The sweater's first sleeve is half way done, I love top down sleeves, each decrease goes faster and faster.  Won't be long before I'm wearing it!  I'll be sad when the last stitch is cast off, long term projects make me happy and content.  It's like visiting with a friend you know well and you pick up where you left off.

  1. You know it's a good knitting project when you don't want it to end! We're supposed to have a very wet weekend here, so I'm glad you're all ready with reading material. Fingers crossed you find your sandals (and then tell me where you got them)! I'm always looking for sturdy yet stylish and I even bought an extra backup pair when I was happy with my last pair of Keens.

  3. Wondering where you got your blue and silver planner/calendar... trying to switch over to a smaller one than I used for years, so it fits easily in my bag...

    1. I bought it last July at Barnes and noble - the brand name is paperblanks if you want to google it maybe. I LOVE how little it is and it fits in my purse. I used to carry a five by seven one from Barnes and noble but it was a cram into some purses!!

  4. Hmmm, maybe I need to reread The Handmaid's Tale; it's been ages. Right now The Midwife of Hope River is keeping me busy. Love your blanket and the sweater project, too.

  5. Isn't it terrible how alluring the *wrong* foods are. I too feel much better when I eat more veggies and less sugary treats.

  6. I'm glad your husband's schedule will become less hectic. I hope he is doing things that relax him as well. Good for you on your daily walks and healthy salad. Do you eat that for dinner? I try to have a vegetarian lunch every day and eat less at dinner + drink 60 oz of water. I walked 4.15 miles today. I was feeling tired and a little achy earlier. I took some IB with green tea.

    1. I eat my salads for lunch mostly. I am vegan for my salad usually. I walk about 3-4 miles daily (weather permitting). The strengthening exercises have been helping immensely!

  7. Good healthy food is good medicine. I feel so much better on a healthy diet. Even an evening at book group with a few treats leaves me feeling sluggish the next day. I rather like knitting sleeves as I know I'm coming to the end of a sweater. It seems as if I can see the progress. I'm anxious to see the sweater. Narrow feet are a challenge. I have the same.

  9. Time is indeed flying by, and here in NY spring has been very slow, but I think we're getting there. :-)
    I absolutely live on salads during spring and summer. For some reason, it just feels good to eat lighter during these seasons, and once the farmer's markets are in full swing, it is even better.
    Your sweater looks like it's coming along beautifully. I really love that yarn.

  10. hoping that rhythm comes to my days soon.....i'm ready for the craziness to end!!! big garden fund-raiser is next week....and then, fingers-crossed!!! your days seem so gentle and serene!! How did the shoe shopping go? I did the same thing a couple days ago----ended up with a sweater (with butterflies----I'm highlighting the butterfly garden on the garden tour this year, but temps are predicted in the upper 80s), a funky smock top, and a purse.....no shoes. Hope you fare better!!!!

  11. I like a regular schedule. Ours has been topsy turvy and it really throws me for a loop. Several years ago, my daughter gave me a book, Who Moved My Cheese... because I don't really like change. ;) Hoping your schedule does get back to a regular rhythm soon!

    Keeping littles WILL get a jingle stuck in your head every time. LOL! Kudos to you for the salad a day and walking. Why, oh, why, do we go back to the devil foods? LOL! Hope you found the perfect shoes. blessings ~ tanna

  12. Paperblanks...I'm going to look it up. I love that you and the shawl are finishing up and still in love!!! I sort of do the one bite rule of bad foods. It was initially very hard to have just one bite, but now it is usually enough and I savor the one bite of bad more than many. Give it a try

  13. I can't believe we are halfway through May either! the time does go by fast. That is great you are eating salads everyday for lunch, I should incorporate more salads for lunch into my diet as I am trying to eat less grains overall. That is sweet you were babysitting a one year old, I love that age they are so innocent and sweet. I was a nanny a couple of summers back watching a one and a half year old it was wonderful. Congrats on almost being done the sleeve! I know what you mean.. I am almost done my sweater too and it is bittersweet, I guess we'll have to start another one! :) Have a great weekend.

    2. Yeah it was a lot of work but I really loved it, the girl was the sweetest and made it so enjoyable. Yes I will! I am thinking after I finish the one I am working on, I will knit one that is fully on circular needles that would be fun!
