Weekends

How was your weekend?  Mine was slow and steady.  I'm the famous tortoise taking my time to win the race.  I've sat around a lot and I must say I'm now comfortable enough to knit which is all that really matters if you're a knitter.  I feel so calm when there are knitting needles in my hand.

Yesterday was a do-nothing day.  We took a walk down the dirt road before lunchtime.  In the afternoon, I worked on the red hat while my husband made his famous curry dinner.  We were together doing our own things - one of the best facets of our marriage, being alone - together!

Today was more of the same.  Another walk down the same dirt road and lots more resting my back and knitting or reading my books.  Oh did I mention there were donuts?  yup.  Definitely donuts cure back pain...

Kathy B asked on  Friday's post why I named my blog Pumpkin Sunrise.

Well....the story is a little twisty turvy.  I knew I wanted to have a blog and I anguished over a name since blogger (the platform I chose and love) is used by so many people that it's a challenge to find a unique name that's not used.

I knew my blog would be about knitting, but also my personal reflections and a way to document my days.  If you know me well, you know that I am up at 5 a.m. religiously.  Hence the 'sunrise' portion of the blog name.  I came up with 'pumpkin' because I love fall and I celebrate a birthday during the Autumn season.  I also adore the color orange.

When I typed in pumpkin sunrise, it was available, shortly after I bought the domain name.  That's the story of my name picking.  I found it more challenging to name a blog than to name a child or puppy.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your well wishes and suggestions for my back.  I had my first physical therapy appointment this past Friday and oh my goodness, I felt so good after the treatment. I'm scheduled for a month of therapy two times a week.  Onward and upward!!

How was your weekend?

  2. I'm glad Kathy asked about pumpkin sunrise; I've wondered but never thought to ask! I'm even more glad that your back is beginning to feel better, even after one PT appt. Hope it continues and you stay feeling good. Sitting and knitting is a good thing; it looks like you are casting on your third hat!

  3. I am so happy to hear your back is feeling better. I love that "alone together" comment about marriage. We do some of that at our house too, I just never knew what to call it.

  4. I missed that you were having back pain! :( Lord have mercy! PT sure can help! I am so glad that I still have PT for my foot!

  5. Glad you are finding relief. I need to see someone about my neck. It's hard to get in a comfortable position to sleep! I know it's from sewing and knitting, but I am not giving them up, so maybe a PT can help. I love your blog name, always have!

  9. I am thrilled to hear you are finding some relief. You would be in good company with Gerard he is an early riser too, I prefer to get up slowly and take my time around 7.

  10. Love how you came about your blog name, so glad you have found a good PT and it is working wonders, it is amazing how much difference one session can make, though sometimes it can take a few days for the benefits to appear.

  11. I'm so sorry you're having on-going back issues. Yuck! Thanks to a windsurfing accident in my youth, I'm missing a few discs and vertebrae on one side & I need to stay stretched to prevent compression and pain. Naturally, I prefer binge watching Netflix to stretching. So, the doctor gave me an Excellent, simple body realignment stretch/thing to do. Stand with your back to a flat wall, with your head, shoulders, butt & heels touching the wall. Suck in your belly and try to pull the small of your back against the wall while keeping everything else against the wall. It's not possible to do, but try. While holding that position, slide down the wall, doing a deep knee bend, then slowly slide back up. Relax and repeat a few times. It's Amazing how well it works for lower back pain. Physical therapy was also a big help, but that one 'stretch' has saved my life a zillion times.

And has the doctor/therapist talked to you about changing the way you do things? I'm assuming you have lower back issues.... When vacuuming or sweeping, hold the vacuum/broom in front of you and push/pull it directly straight ahead, not on an angle. It takes longer but you aren't twisting and putting tension on your back at the same time. When going up & down stairs, take a step with 1 foot then bring the other to that stair then repeat to the next step - like a little kid does, rather than left foot on step #1, right foot on step #2, left foot to step #3.... It's slow, but again, it prevents uneven tension on your back. Also, when you sit, make sure your knees are an inch higher than your hips. It's amazing how much difference that can make.

Okay, preaching over. :) Hope your back is feeling better soon. Thanks for explaining Pumpkin Sunrise. I love the name but have always wondered about it.

    1. Thanks for the tips Jeannie, once I'm allowed to do exercises, I'll keep this in mind. I already accommodate the back with household chores :)

  14. THanks for explaining your Pumpkin Sunrise. IT was YOUR blog name that had me wonder and post the question. I love sunset and pumpkins! On mornings like to day when I get up for the barn, I see the sunrise and though half asleep I do think it is beautiful!!!

  15. I’m so glad you shared the story of how you came up with the name of your blog! I’ve always wondered. I found it so hard to decide on a name, I think I’ve changed it three times! I’m so had your back is feeling better, Karen!

  17. So sorry to hear about your back (again, just catching up on blog reading). Glad PT is helping. Great story for your blog name (which I love). Also love your comment about you and your husband being alone together - that's me and Fletch quite a bit!

  18. I am a true believer of physical therapy. I had hip/back pain and the doctor wanted to put me on muscle relaxers. I tried them but hated them. I had to actually request pt. It has been several years since I have had any issues!
