Knitting News

I'm mentally crumbling under my own self-imposed deadlines.  Why do I do this to myself?  I set some arbitrary goals then panic.  So - today is about being realistic in my expectations and setting time aside daily to focus on making progress.

I am one-third of the way through the gray hat knitting that is a gift.  I can knit and read at the same time with this project so I'm sailing through the ribbing.  This is the project that is not stressing me out, hats are fun and fast.

I finished four washcloths from one skein of scrubby cotton.  I'd like to knit four more from the other skein but it's okay that I don't knit them.

This shawl is taking up mental space and somewhat stressful because I'd like to be finished and have it off the needles.  I'm going to keep knitting and keep hoping I finish this project.  Sadly, I cannot read and knit at the same time so this is the TV knitting project.

You cannot see well, but there is some lovely eyelet lace in between the panels.  When I block the daylights out of this shawl it's going to look fabulous!!  But first, I need to finish knitting..

  1. It looks like you've figured out that the key words are "arbitrary" and "self-imposed"! Deadlines and goals are important, and I suspect they are a big part of why you are such a prolific knitter, but deadlines can be adjusted, and realistic expectations and progress are quite important. No mental crumbling, please; then you might not be able to knit at all! :-)

  2. I was just having a conversation with myself about self imposed deadlines and expectations. Hope you can get that worked out too.

  3. I love knitting that you can read to! And, I think you are an incredibly prolific knitter!

  4. You should take over the weekly Yarn Along yarn and books posts and make it your own and then we can all play!

  5. You're amazing! Keep up the good knitting!

  6. Ughhh... you are reminding me of my own deadline. I've gotten to the sleeves on the sweater I'm making an ANOTHER attempt to love a sweater. And, I hate doing the magic loop and I can't find my size 5 DPNs. So, it's sitting in the basket. No good fairies coming to finish those sleeves. I'm going to have to force myself to pick it back up again.

That shawl is going to be beautiful! I'd finish it for you if you'd do my sleeves. hee hee.

  7. Self imposed deadlines are the worst! Keep knitting though - you'll get there.

  8. I'm always amazed by people who can knit without looking at their knitting. I've tried looking up from my knitting a few times and I get super stressed out by it! Keep on pluggin' away at your projects and they'll be finished before you know it.

  9. I have decided NOT to do that to myself. It's happened many times. Even this one baby blanket... I should have started it a long time ago.

  10. We are so alike. My knitting brings me joy, stress , happiness and frustration ....sometimes all in one day!

  11. yes - knitting can be fun and not so fun. I'm avoiding a jersey I started back in April, as I've come to a hard bit. I really just need to sit down and figure it out....

  12. That scrubby yarn scares me. It looks like it would be rough on the hands. How did you like knitting with it?

    1. It is not rough on the hands, but it does not go smoothly as regular wool. I am only doing garter stitch and believe it or not, I can knit without looking! so the yarn is not splitty.

  13. It is a good idea to reaccess deadlines. Sometimes I think there is a black hole in the middle of larger projects, that time when I am over the first blush of excitement about a project and stuck in the middle. I knit and knit and don't get anywhere. Eventually though I knit the project out of the black hole and the end is in sight. I knit two November birthday gifts and two smallish Christmas gifts. If I get more done fine but if it isn't fun I don't do it. Your projects look great and you will get them done eventually.

  14. You've got lots done and lots on the go right now! I like the idea of knitting the scrubby washcloths with that special yarn for them.

  15. You sound so much like me it's scary. Being home now I'm always setting deadlines for myself. Which in a way is good. But lately I'm getting angry at myself for not meeting my expectations. I find I didn't do what I planned to do, so I'm disappointed with myself. Meanwhile, I did do something worthwhile, like today I blogged. I need to have general goals and stop obsessing. I'm worse than a tough boss! And this is supposed to be fun. By the way beautiful house.

  17. I think all of us "suffer" from a bit of this, around holiday time.
Your shawl is just gorgeous, and I love those colors.

  18. Love that shawl! Sounds like you have holiday-itis! Every year I promise to start sooner and never do. Sigh.

  19. Deadlines are stressful even for us knitters. My swap stress had me making all these mistakes today when I was packaging everything up. You are knitting so much more than me. You can do it!
