Weekends

How was your weekend?  Splendid, I hope.  Mine was quite fun, our son arrived Friday evening without any problems since the weather was questionable.  Earlier in the day, we lost our electricity for six hours, it's been since the beginning of October since the last outage.  So while I was inconvenienced the five month full on electricity days were wonderful.  I pray I get another five month stint.

Saturday morning I baked a birthday cake for my husband.  We had lunch and dinner out, unheard of!  My body is begging for regular home meals and yet I resist writing out that pesky menu plan....  Why do restaurants want to use tons of salt in their seasoning.  Ugh.  Anyways, the day was wonderful having the family here.  I appreciate them coming in and traveling and I'm grateful they live where they do so they can drive here and I in turn can drive and visit them.

Yesterday, I started some knitting projects, honestly it was a huge cast on frenzy.  I loved it.  I started a shawl, my sister's sweater and I've yet to cast on another hat.  On the needles already is a hat and a pair of socks.  I've ordered some yarn for the toddler cardigan and I hope it arrives quickly and that I have enough (the company only had two skeins left so I'm hedging my bets).

I'm reading Home by Marilynne Robinson and love sinking into the story.  I admire how she makes me feel all the emotions while reading.  The story is simple, yet the character development is layer upon layer and thought provoking.

While the kids were here, I was knitting away listening to their conversations.  Frodo was thrilled to have them home and forgot all about Holly.  Holly didn't want to have anything to do with a full house and the noise.  She mostly hid in her room, occasionally peeking out then hiding once more.  She is literally a scaredy cat.

The Frodo and Holly drama is slightly improving.  When they sit beside each other (Frodo on a lap), Holly will gingerly, ever so carefully touch Frodo's paw with her paw.  Then she'll do it again.  She even rolled onto her back and paw touched.

Trust me, I have burned this memory into my brain to keep bringing it back again and again.  Especially when there is barking, hissing and chasing.  I don't think there was a cat chase yesterday.. We try our very best to stop or intercede, however - Frodo is mighty fast and Holly is quite daring on where she walks knowing full well he will come out.

We are either stressed out or highly entertained with the unfolding events.

CAKE!
Yesterday and today I've walked the dog around the neighborhood with a spring in my step.  The days feel lighter and spring is around the bend.  I'm grateful I live in a place where I witness all the seasonal changes.

After morning Mass, I've been doing tons of laundry and tidying up the house here and there.  We said goodbye to our daughter and son in law as they headed back to their place.

How was your weekend?

  1. I had a pretty good weekend. My daughters came on Saturday for tea and knitting. I finally had enough energy to do some cook ahead so I feel ready for this week. I am trying to go slow and let the healing continue - and I still don’t feel 100%. I want to cast on a shawland after reading your post, I think I will do that tonight!

  2. Wow, six hours is a long time. I'm glad you were safe though and that there was no property damage. Holly is getting so big now! I love reading about her and Frodo's hot and cold moments. Too funny; just like siblings.

    1. I think you'd be charmed by Beverly Cleary's writing. I couldn't help it with the HP stuff. Next year if I go, I may just concentrate on finding colorways named after my favorite characters unless I finally get my Cozy Memories blanket started and will then look for mini sets.

  3. Happy Birthday to your Hubby, sounds like a wonderful weekend with family. The antics of Frodo and Holly always make me smile. I had the pleasure of teaching some of the children in Sunday school, they were a joy.

  4. Ahhh...the kids were home for Dad's birthday...how wonderful. And how special to have lunch and dinner both out on the same day. That equals no cooking and no clean up at home. :) I'm beginning to get the idea that Holly is a tease when it comes to her relationship to Frodo. The birthday cake looks lovely, as does the blue and white upon which it rests. :) Have a great start to your week, Karen.

  5. Glad your outage was short. our son in NEPA still has not power. They are telling him not until Weds. That is hard with a toddler at home.

  6. Well, it sounds like your weekend was a good one all the way around! (Personally, any weekend involving cake is a good one as far as I'm concerned!)

  7. Happy birthday to your husband. Sounds like you had a really good weekend. Seems to me Holly and Frodo are having fun together, just not the kind of fun you'd prefer ;-)
We had a very relaxed weekend, just a little drive into the country and a visit to the beach, but we stayed home mostly.

  8. I will trade your dog/kitten drama for my dog/dog/puppy drama!! A husky puppy who doesn't know the word stop, who loves to bedevil the older dog, and scares the younger dog to bits. There is a lot of snarling and hiding going on here, and that's just me!

  9. Your weekend was full of wonderful moments and good things happening. Thank you for sharing them so beautifully. I am entertained by your descriptions of dog and cat drama. Sounds like they have the potential of becoming friends, but will still continue their chase scenes for the fun of it. Happy Monday.

  11. What a wonderful weekend! Happy birthday to your husband! I love the updates on Holly and Frodo and am so glad you are focusing on the positive. : ) Someday they will become friends. We spent Saturday meeting architects for our new house and quickly learned that they are way more expensive to engage than we thought they would be! So, onto plan B, which is to scour the internet for house plans. We found some promising ones!

  15. We've had a good weekend, warming up after having snow again, which is unusual where we are, I see you have snowdrops now. Belated birthday wishes to your husband. Love the idea of a cast on frenzy, there is a lovely buzz you get when you start a new project isn't there.

  20. What a lovely weekend you had! That cake has me itching to get into the kitchen and whip up a just because cake! Had a nice quiet weekend here, with a good bit of knitting time, so that's always a plus! The grey yarn you've cast on with is lovely!

  21. What is it about restaurants and salt? I am always SO thirsty after eating at a restaurant.
How lovely to have kids home. By June, both mine will be in Miami -- so far from Wisconsin!
Holly and our Kola may look alike, but they have opposite personalities. Kola fears nothing!

  22. I'm a lover of seasons too. As much as I complain about summer's heat & winter's cold, I'd go nuts without the change in seasons. Glad you got your power back & had a nice visit with family. Sounds like Frodo & Holly have entered into sibling status and enjoy bothering each other. :)
