Sweater Knitting

Image
I am pleased to share with you some exciting news, I have finished knitting the sweater !  All the ends are buried so now I have to pick out buttons, I have a few in mind.  Soak and block this beauty.  Hopefully all will happen today.  I know I bought buttons with this sweater in mind sometime in the spring while visiting my sister.  So I just have to find them... I was getting a little tired of knitting the sleeves, there is just not a good way in my mind to knit sleeves fast.  I opted for two circulars-it felt fast but not fast enough.  Hopefully I will have some photos by next week so please visit again. My other knit is a wurm  hat with Zitron Unisono  yarn.  I love this yarn!!  It is soft yet crisp in stitch definition and I am thrilled with the long color repeats.  I went out and bought another skein in another colorway.  This knitting I am savoring, if it was a food.  I love the way the stitches feel in my hand and I'm just enjoying working with the yarn.   I

Amused

Image
My husband and I have made an effort to go on day trips, enjoying what is near where we live.  As much as I long for a beach getaway and maybe it will happen this year but I doubt it, I can get lost in taking in the sights and sounds of Northeastern PA. Yesterday we drove a few towns over and spent some time at  Knoebels Amusement Resort .  We had a  great time walking around.  You see, it's one of the few amusement parks where admittance is free. And the parking is free. (you still by tickets to ride)  Gotta love that. You would never catch me on that ride in a million years. I've been waiting for the perfect weather day:  low humidity, mid seventies, blue skies and during a week day :) My children would have loved to have any of those brightly colored "buy me now" toys. Just look at that sky!  Is it beautiful or what? That is my husband, not realizing that I've stopped for a photo.  He's quite patient when photography is

Weekends

Image
My weekend was filled with: -opened doors and fresh air -spotting a huge hawk that captured a rabbit-beautiful and no camera in hand -a walk, to drink in the mild summer temperatures -enjoying the butterfly bush that some insects are noticing hopefully a hummingbird will catch word -travelling visitors for lunch-strangers to me, acquaintance to my husband-friends as they left -oh the leftovers from my overkill for a mere lunch -picking the first cucumbers and tomatoes -sleeve knitting, getting very close to completion how was your weekend? Through My Camera Lens

Image
The heat wave is over and I am one happy individual, the back door was opened, birds sang and the cicadas are in full swing heralding mid summer's arrival.  I've huddled inside during the heat wave, with knitting on my lap, ignoring the high temperature and the humidity. Hiding and ignoring makes me blind to what I can see-truly see.  I look out windows, I glance at my surroundings while picking up my mail or newspaper, taking for granted the nature that embraces me each day whether the weather is comfortable or not.  Each morning I journal and I end my entry with what I am grateful for that day.  It resets my attitude-makes me focus on good things. Yesterday I went outside and took my camera and once again, looking at nature through the lens lends pause to my day and several grateful thoughts.  I'm suspended by the moment while capturing nature.  I fiddled with settings, trying to catch that butterfly in flight-unsuccessfully I might add. While crouched

Yarn Along and a Hat

Image
My sweater is still on the needles, in fact I'm still on the first sleeve!  I continue to work on it a little bit each day so I'm making progress but it's slow progress.  So instead of focusing on the sweater sleeve construction, I cast on another project!  Doesn't everyone do that?  It's like starting a new dessert while another dessert is still available.  However, I will not throw my half eaten dessert (sweater) into the freezer (bottom of the knitting bag) to preserve it, promise.  My new project is a wurm hat and it will be the fifth time I've knitted it.  However I only own one since I keep giving them away.  Everyone should knit this hat at least once in their knitting lifetime.  Ravelry notes are here . I finished The Sound and the Fury  by William Faulkner over the weekend.  It was a difficult read in the beginning but it was worth it.  I've never met more miserable characters in a long time.  I want to read it again but not for now, I need a b

Yarn Baskets

Image
I store all of my "pretty" yarn in baskets that way I can see what I have and inspiration can flow easily in my brain.  I do have much much more yarn stored away in a closet, but that is for another post.  Today I thought you could peek at my collections.  The above photo is my worsted weight in wool. This photo is alpaca skeins in mostly fingering weight but there are a few worsted weights tucked underneath.  As you can see, I have a love of green going on. The bottom basket is sock weight yarn and the top basket is lace weight alpaca.  I've shown the fingering weight wool basket in this post . Sigh, if only I could knit all day and all night, that would be so much fun! This was my mother's yarn basket, I've kept it in the family room by my side table.  There are a few more skeins of yarn that were gifts.  I'm still mulling over what they want to be when they are knit up. Do you display your yarns?  How so?

Weekends and Knitting

Image
The weekend was a perfect summer weekend, the heat wave ended and no plans were pressing on anyone's schedule.  Our son came home for rest and relaxation before the last two weeks of his research program.  We all joined in-nothing was accomplished in great magnitude. -puttered about in my studio-tweaking the organizing -knit the first sleeve which is still on the needles but nearly oh so nearly to the cuff -made mac and and cheese from scratch only to give all the leftovers to him to take back -made two loaves of banana nut bread-again one loaf was donated to the cause -dinner out, movie night in-we watched Rain Man -engaged in a bit of daydreaming, trips to maybe take or not How was your weekend? Yarn, Studio, Life

fall goodness  I'm slowly getting used to having my own space.  I spend time in my room and it feels weird-in a good way.  It's quiet and Frodo follows me to take a nap while I'm in there. All I need is a comfy chair to knit in and it will be paradise. I couldn't resist buying the burnt orange cascade 220 yarn the other day.  For now I am just admiring the skeins, casting on a new sweater can happen in September or October. this skein has 560 yards!! Early this morning both kids called (I do love that) and lucky for me our son is coming home for an unscheduled get away weekend.  He has a sore knee from overdoing it-rock climbing and biking-so he's requested a little rest and relaxation.  Who can say no to that?  Today we'll leave around lunchtime to pick him up.  Road trip!   my fingering weight yarn sleeve progression  I'm knitting my sleeves on two circular needles quickly making my way down to the cuff.  Some people dislike sleev

Currently Knitting-Yarn Along

Yes, I'm still reading The Sound and the Fury  by William Faulkner, it's a slow read and requires all of my brain cells.  The writing style is challenging and the story is engaging.  I did cheat a bit though, the first chapter out of four was near impossible to comprehend so I investigated the author's meaning and intent.  I needed a reading crutch that did help me appreciate this work. This sweater made it successfully to the bottom of my knitting bag during my shawl and mitt knitting days.  I am binding off the bottom of the body with an icord bind off.  Slow and tedious but such a detailed edge for a hem.  Love that!  Today will be sleeve knitting, fingers crossed.  Yesterday I finished my mitts and posted all about them-they might be my new favorite mitt pattern. What are you knitting and reading this week? Joining Ginny

Optimistic Mitts Complete

Image
I finished these mitts over the weekend and well, I'm quite happy with them.  The strap and the button detail are my favorite part of the mitt design.  There is a quiet joy rummaging through my button collection deciding on flashy or romantic or unassuming.  I went for unassuming this time around. This project used one skein of cascade 220 , a fantastic basic yarn.  I believe these would make a lovely holiday gift (I know, I know I shouldn't speak of holiday knitting) OR a lovely gift for me.  I have options. Ravelry notes are here .

New Pencils and Fellowship

My weekend was full of visiting goodness.  Our daughter was home for the weekend and her request was to have nothing on the schedule.  How easy is that?  We ate a simple dinner of sandwiches on Friday night after driving back and forth from her apartment.   Saturday found us at home for the day, knitting, reading, talking, laughing, sitting on the swing doing most of the same outside as we did inside.  The temperatures started to climb back up into the high eighties as did the humidity.  For dinner, we ate at our favorite local Italian restaurant.  That evening we watched Les Miserables (the movie). Funny after that musical, the song stuck in my head is "the point of no return" from Phantom of the Opera, wonder why??  I'm enjoying the music loop so it really doesn't matter.  Our son called and joined in the family fun, being passed around to each family member-almost as if he was here as well. He's compiling a list of where to apply for grad school.

Weekly Musings

It's been a few weeks since I've updated you on my decomposing stump.  Who knew that watching a once vibrant tree decompose could be entertaining.  We lost the tree from a storm maybe five years ago?  We (meaning he) never cut the stump off to the ground.  Whenever we arrive home from a walk, we stop to assess the progress. Fungi, insects and what was once thought of as a bear, well.....now we shrunk the culprit down to a pileated wookpecker , makes more sense doesn't it?  Although the bear idea was a fun one.  I hear him in the distance at times during the day and I've seen him fly over our property while he's searching for those tasty bugs.  One day I will catch him (with the camera) and prove his existence. Today I'm off to pick up our daughter for a three day visit.  We have each day wide opened for adventures of any sort.  Maybe we'll just sit around and talk, which is okay as well.  She hasn't been home since May and I'm looking fo

Breakfast Oats with Blueberries

Image
I stumbled upon another obsession with food, first it was avocados and now it's soaked oats  (breakfast will never be the same).  I'm probably one of the few people that like cold breakfasts, so when I came across "soaked overnight oats",  I read "I don't have to cook at the crack of dawn" oats.  To make this delicious dish I measure out 1/2 cup of rolled oats (I use gluten free ones) and 1/2 cup of "milk".  I am currently using light soy milk.  Mix it together, cover it up overnight.  In the morning it looks like the above photo.  The hardest part of this recipe is remembering to mix it the night before.  I am in love with this breakfast so much that I have been diligent in creating my breakfast before bed.  Anyways, in the morning, splash some more milk of choice, add a handful of blueberries and for the sweet tooth some sugar. cold soaked oats with blueberries-check.  juice in my pooh bear glass-check.  morning poetry-check

My mitt pattern changed in one week, I'm now knitting the Optimistic Mitts .  I loved the Jo March Mitts but I wasn't getting gauge and I didn't want to knit with worsted weight on size 3 needles, it would be too rough on my hands.  I've notice that the tighter the gauge the more flare up on my joints.  So I switched and am quite pleased with my choice.  It's easy, fun and quick.  One mitt is done and the other one is almost half way.  I will knit up the March mitts one day with skinnier yarn.  Oh and if you haven't seen it yet, I finished my garden shawl .  I promise you, I'll be knitting that pattern again :) We went to the library the other day and I scooped up a few books that I've leisurely flipped through.  I was in the mood for some poetry and simple cooking.  The word simple had me-I've heard about this cookbook and I might have to own it.  I am still slogging, yes slogging through The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner.  So far I&#

Garden Shawl Complete

Image
Oh this shawl is lovely in person-I wish everyone could come over, visit and see for yourselves.  I guess you'll have to trust me :)  The yarn is Madelinetosh Lace and it's a favorite of mine for lace weight knitting.  The stitch definition is supreme and I love the layers of tonal colors. Here's a helpful hint-do not wear bracelets while blocking your beloved shawls.  Yep, I snagged this right when I first started to pin it out.  I could have just kicked myself.  However, I quickly worked the four inch snag (I know!) back in.  Lesson learned from this seasoned knitter. I apologize for not modeling this shawl.  I was feeling quite frumpy yesterday.  A bad hair day started it off and the thought of wrapping myself in wool on a hot day was not going to de-frump me.  You'll just have to imagine me in it. In my mind, I'm quite beautiful in it with a backdrop of crisp falling leaves in mid autumn-a cold weather lover at heart. I chose this shawl patte

Weekends

We (which means him) harvested all the spinach and lettuce from our little raised bed garden.  I thoroughly enjoyed both.  We traveled to see our son on Saturday for a quick visit.  We walked the campus and explored the town that he temporarily calls home.  We found a little bistro restaurant and I ate a tasty grilled cheese sandwich with focaccia bread and fresh mozarella...mmm... He is half way through his summer research program, seems like we just dropped him off! Yesterday I knit and knit and knit. I will share more, soon. We pulled out the calendar to plot out our travels, the real ones and the imaginary ones for the fall.  Sometimes the daydreams of possible places to visit can be just as fun as the actual trips. Funny how technology with virtual calendars cannot quite help my disorganized mind like the paper calendar that is in the kitchen.   Seeing the weekends and penciling in events is quite helpful :) Overall my weekend was: sunshine, humid, slow, long, peaceful an

Ordinary Days

Image
I snapped this photo in May at a local greenhouse and waited for the Fourth of July to share it.  How was your holiday?  We had a quiet celebration with friends.  Yesterday morning found me in the kitchen slicing up vegetables, preparing a rice salad and peeling corn on the cob.  By lunchtime, the bulk of my work was done.  Even though dark clouds threatened a rain shower, the sun made its appearance and we had fun sitting outside at the patio catching up, sharing stories.  We've known each other for ten years.  Our gatherings are sporadic but each time we gather the distance, time dissolves and we laugh, joke, reconnect. Yesterday felt like Saturday and today feels like Sunday, because of a holiday in the middle of the week.  I find myself giddy from thinking "oh, I have the weekend yet to come!".  Almost like discovering paper money forgotten in a pant's pocket.  Don't you love when that happens?  My studio room is complete for now.  Using what I h

Because there are two books in the photo, you might be thinking I'm reading both.  Well sort of... I started The Last Time I Saw You  by Elizabeth Berg and the story is not keeping me interested.  I'm going to give it a few more pages and decide whether or not to continue.  Yesterday morning, I started The Sound and the Fury  by William Faulkner.  Rumor has it that this novel is his best work,  I'll let you know what I think after I've read a fair portion of it.  I've been sad (sigh) since finishing Fault in our Stars by John Green-it was an excellent novel and I highly recommend it, if the topic of cancer does not stress you. Oh my knitting-I am quickly approaching chart c which is the final chart of my lovely shawl .  Each row is pure pleasure to knit and I'll be lonely when I bind off the stitches.  I started a pair of mitts yesterday on a whim, the pattern is Jo March Mitts .  Looks like a fun pattern from what I've skimmed over.  I'm using som

My Studio

Image
I formulated an idea a few days ago.  Why not have a space to call my own?  You see, I have yarn squished in my bedroom closet and yarn sprinkled through out the family room.  My notebooks and pens were stashed in a kitchen cupboard.  I had nooks and crannies everywhere.  Since the kids are both on their adventures for the summer, I suggested to my husband that we flip the guest room into my studio room (it's a craft room but I like the word studio better). He said "why not!" that is one of the many reasons I love him. So yesterday morning, 9 a.m. we started.  We moved big shelves downstairs, small shelves upstairs, a table from storage upstairs.  I collected my "stuff" from corners and baskets.  Poor Frodo, he did not know what was going on and followed me everywhere.  I know my legs and arms were aching, so he must have been just as tired (he still sleeping as I type). I still have to share this room with guests when they visit.  However, we have
