Book Acquisitions

Last Friday we went to our local library book sale.  I look forward to this sale two times a year.  I always find something.  My only competition is my son who happens to find many books that I would love to pick up.  He is able to ferret out the classics so much faster that me.  It must be his youth and internal radar to where they are placed in the room.

Anyways, I was quite happy to pick up seven books for under seven dollars!  The Alcott book has a copyright printing of 1932-not in the best shape with the book spine.  The Alice in Wonderland book has a copyright printing of 1929. There is nothing like an old book!

I was thrilled to find a copy of My Antonia, would you believe I haven't read one Willa Cather book in my life---the shame!  I have read many of Alcott's books but I do not remember reading Rose in Bloom.  I first read Little Women when I was thirteen years old.  It was the "book" that inspired me to read in all of my free time.  That summer I would lie on the front porch swing with a glass of home brewed iced tea and a book while my friends were playing softball.

Do you have a book that started your reading craze?

  1. I haunt our library book sales too! Aren't they the best deal in town!!! As an only child, I was a reader my whole life--but the books I remember best (other than Nancy Drew!!!) were the Borrowers series and Mr. Poppers Penguins. Loved those!!! Funny how after all these years, those kid's books are being made into movies!

  2. Trixie Belden. She was just a plain jane tomboy like me, and a little less stuffy than Nancy Drew. My mother and Aunts read them and passed them on to me and now my girls read them.

That and the Little House books.

Books are such a wonderful thing. I was the same way. Enjoy your finds!

  3. Awesome! I love old books, too -- those may be worth some money!

I can't remember "the" book but I started reading a lot while Judy Blume was the "it" YA author.

  5. I love the smell of old books. I wish I could remember what started it for me. I try to pinpoint the time, but I started reading young and cannot remember a time when I didn't love to read. Enjoy your new pile. I have read a few of those, but may need to pickup the others from my library.

  7. Lucky you! I love library book sales; it's a treasure hunt. Alice and Cool Knits for Kids-wow!
I don't know what started my book craze. I've always loved them-from picture books to novels. I think one of my fave picture books was Blueberries for Sal and my novel love started with Little House books.

  8. I can't remember a time after I learned how to read that I didn't read.

Heck I would read toilet paper if it was printed on!

I do remember loving books by Beverly Cleary, Judy Blume and the Nancy Drew series when I was young. My love of books have grown from there.

  10. LOVE your pile karen! i love book sales too! it's my favorite kind of sale i think (besides wool, tho i hardly find it on sale).

that is the only willa book i have read, but now i'd like to look for more. and i've never seen roses in bloom, i very much need that one too.

i read all the time as a child, dr. doolittle and pippi longstocking were my favorites, oh and chitty chitty bang bang, do you remember that one? the book that changed everything for me was hawaii by james michener. when i was 12 my dad took me with him to work to downtown los angeles. on his lunch break he took me into an old secondhand bookstore. as a special treat he bought me a first edition hardbound copy of hawaii. it was my first real novel to read. i have it still, sitting on my shelf of most treasured books. it defintely fueled my love for reading even more, but also a love for hawaii (moved there the day i graduated high school)and a love for travel.

  11. I had to learn English when I was 8 years old. My mom told me that I would learn the language better if I read all the time. So when I finally learned to read, I read voraciously. My first chapter novel was "The Secret Garden", which my mom gave me. I haven't stopped reading since.

    I love those library sales!

  13. I love old books too!
There wasn't one book that I remember getting me reading but my parents were constantly reading. I remember my mom reading The Hobbit to me when I was 4! By third grade I consistanly had several books going at a time. I def blame, umm... credit them with my love of reading and books.

  16. I have a confession, I practically stalk the local libraries for their annual book sales! Mr. Husband is quicker at finding the good finds, but luckily I make his dinner so he pretty much goes in the sale with my book-wish-list in hand.

Looks like you got some good ones! I haven't read Little Women, can you believe that? It's always been on my 'to-read-list.' Maybe now is the time! There were a handful of books around second grade for me that got my passion for reading burning, and every once and awhile I flip through them again. Can't wait to share them with my own little pups someday!

  20. Wow, you did very well. I loved and still do love reading Enid Blyton, Milly Molly Mandy and All Creatures Great and Small series. I'm looking forward to the time - when it comes - of reading chapter books to my children. I'm in the process of buying lots of bookshelves so I can finally put all the books from the boxes on the shelves. Can hardly wait! Your knitting is beautiful. Love Katie x
