Out with the Old

My organizational blitz through the house is still going strong, however it's illogical and sporadic, a drawer here, a closet there.  Yesterday I tackled my bedroom closet that contains so. much. yarn.  Most of it is inherited yarn from my mother.  I have difficulty parting from it even though it's unlikely that I'll be knitting with it any time soon.  Let's just say, destashing is a work in progress.

Anyways, I've been wanting some tins for my family room to keep some "stuff" inside.  While going through the closet I found these two tins that were from my teenage years (antiques???perhaps!).  At one time they contained fresh writing paper and envelopes.  Now they are empty and ready to be filled with knitting notions and pens.  I'm excited that I didn't go shopping and re purposed what I already own.

Also gone are many pairs of jeans, forgotten pajamas, tee shirts and socks.  With each item ready to be donated there is a freeing feeling.  I still have more to tackle but I'm loving what's been accomplished so far.

The photo is our guest room, the quilt and shams were sewn by my mother. The tablecloth was stitched by my gram.  I think it's the sunniest room in the house.  It is also the room where all the donations are being squirreled away.

  1. It feels wonderful to declutter, doesn't it? My goal last year was to get rid of 365 items and I'm happy to say I surpassed that.

  2. I'm in the process of something very similar. Oh, Karen. This is the year. This is the year that I am emotionally ready to tackle my dreams. Baby steps are going to see me through it all. Right now we're cleaning (ha! With toddlers?!) the house and giving away the things we don't need. You are so right. It is freeing. With each bag I fill, my heart fills and a small weight leaps off of my chest.

Sadly, my baby steps are keeping me away from my blog. I suppose finding the time for everything will be another step to take in the near future. (:

  5. My husband has started to clean out the basement. He keeps putting piles of "stuff" on "my" side of it so I can go through to get rid of stuff. We moved here a year & a half ago. I'm of the idea just to take all the stuff that hasn't come upstairs since we put it down there on moving day out for the donation truck to come get. He's of the idea we should sort through it first to make sure!

  6. I really need to have a clear out - but I find it hard to take the time to do it, maybe because I make so much mess during the process! Knitting is safer ;)

  7. I did a BUNCH of clearing out in the fall and I need to get back to it before it becomes a MAJOR chore again! It does make you feel free. I love that you have your mother's yarn and so many of your "womenfolk's" handwork. Wonderful. Just wonderful. blessings ~ tanna

  8. I love love love de-cluttering. It was so great when we were getting packed up to move, car load after car load of stuff going to charity. It amazed me how much stuff we had accumulated, and it felt so good to clear it all out.

  9. Such a grand feeling. Finding and repurposing the old and clearing out the un-needed. Perhaps you could make a throw from your mother's yarns?

  10. Funnily enough, I am just taking a quick tea break from destashing some of my yarn. This is definitely the year I use up and/or give away quite a bit of it - it's taking over the house somewhat!

    I love those tins.

  11. Love, LOVE the tins.. Treasures unearthed make the act of de-cluttering even more exciting. Especially since you are in the process of taking much out of the house. No guilt in finding more..

    Blessings, Debbie

  15. My plan for this afternoon was to go through some of Corrine's old baby stuff to give to a friend that is having a baby this spring. We were lucky to be gifted a lot of hand-me-downs before C was born and I had to idea to save some of her stuff to pass along. I'm kind of glad I did, but not sure where we stored all of it!

  24. When you're done, do you want to come over here & organize my house?? I've been working on that project forever & I never seem to make as much headway as I'd like.

I love those tins. Finding things you didn't know you had hidden away somewhere? One of the best things in the world. Even better than finding $20 in the pocket of your winter coat that you don't remember leaving there last year! xo

  25. Ohhhh. Good for you. Feels SO good, no?
I cleaned out so much when we moved. Now I just keep a bag open in a closet and drop things in there I want to get rid of (grown out of kids clothes, for example) whenever I come across them. It fills up every month or so and off it goes to the local thrift.
