Yarn Along

A week ago, shortly after finishing this shawl, I decided to cast on another shawl.  If you know me, you know I love tiny needles and lace weight yarn and I tend to have a project on the needles at all times to satisfy my knitting desires.  When I saw this shawl in the "hot right now" category while noodling around Ravelry, I knew I had to cast on.  It's simple and it grows and it's a half circle, a perfect summer project! My ravelry page is here.

The Midwife by Jennifer Worth is an excellent memoir and a lovely read.  Call the Midwife TV series  is based on this book. (you really should be watching the show as well).  As I read this book I feel like she is personally talking to me face to face maybe over a cup of tea.  I am getting a history lesson without knowing I am and that's the kind of history lessons I like.  It's interesting to read how the tenement housing conditions were in the mid 1950's also with lifestyle choices and her long work hours.  There are two other books she wrote that I am itching to get my hands on.

What are you knitting and reading this week?

  13. wow another lovely project...it's going to be beautiful. I just got a card through the door to say there's a customs charge on the Quince yarn I ordered so I have to go and collect it from the sorting office. So meanwhile it's socks and wash cloths and I'm looking for another pattern for some lovely bargain linen I bought.

Reading? I'm reading lots of Debbie Bliss pattern books, and recipe books, like Bowl food and I've just started The Heat of Day by Elizabeth Bowen which was written and set in a similar time to the one you're reading. I've only just begun but so far am enjoying it.

    Happy shawl knitting.

  16. I love the colors you've been using. Very earthy and serene. Reading? What's that? I'm afraid I've been consumed with a knitting chart. Can't tell you how glad I am to be past that. Not sure how much I care for those charts. My respect for your skills keeps going up!

  29. Your shawl is looking very pretty. I have heard about the show but have not had the chance to watch it. Apparently there are some very pretty handknits in that show too. Thank you for your kind words too, it is nice to know that there are friends out there going through similar things too.

  33. Oh, I love that series! I shall have to look for the book. I love look of lace and small needles, but I must admit my mind wanders and I get lost in the pattern at times, or I get interrupted, then end up having to unknit and never end up with the right number of stitches again. How long did it take for you to really get the hang of lace knitting? Should I just keep trying?! :)

  34. I love that show, too. I'm going to have to read the book, too!

  35. That's the kind of history lesson I like, too--I've gotta get that book. I am fascinated by how much things have changed in my own lifetime (no cable t.v., cell phones, microwaves, etc. when I was a little kid). But, just a decade or two earlier--when my parents were growing up--things were *really* different.

I'm putting the Moss Garden shawl in my cue--let us know how you like the pattern. What yarn are you using? I love the color.
