Ordinary Days

I snapped this photo in May at a local greenhouse and waited for the Fourth of July to share it.  How was your holiday?  We had a quiet celebration with friends.  Yesterday morning found me in the kitchen slicing up vegetables, preparing a rice salad and peeling corn on the cob.  By lunchtime, the bulk of my work was done.  Even though dark clouds threatened a rain shower, the sun made its appearance and we had fun sitting outside at the patio catching up, sharing stories.  We've known each other for ten years.  Our gatherings are sporadic but each time we gather the distance, time dissolves and we laugh, joke, reconnect.

Yesterday felt like Saturday and today feels like Sunday, because of a holiday in the middle of the week.  I find myself giddy from thinking "oh, I have the weekend yet to come!".  Almost like discovering paper money forgotten in a pant's pocket.  Don't you love when that happens?

My studio room is complete for now.  Using what I had already in this house makes the space homey and special.  Once you are on a path of thriftiness, it never truly leaves your way of life, plus I have many memories invested in my belongings.  Rummaging through closets and shelves to collect items for the room to decorate was fun.

Since I have a few ears of corn left over and a partial vegetable tray, I think a quickly whipped up chicken salad would make a meal.  (you can read that as Karen is not cooking today). I'll pull out my knitting and listen to a few podcasts to pass the time this afternoon.

Have a great weekend!!!

  1. Sounds like you had a wonderful fourth of July. :-) Ours was a VERY wet one - we had torrential downpours most of the day which gave us 9 inches of rain. In one day!! Good thing about this is, it made for a cozy day with lots of reading and knitting.

  2. Enjoy your second weekend! It sounds like the first one was wonderful hope the second lives up to it.
Love the found money in your pocket analogy. That is the best thing, or when you lose something and then it turns up. Enjoy your chicken salad. I made one for supper last night with lots of fresh herbs it was lovely and summery.
    Bye for now

  7. A repurposed room sounds perfect. I love finding new uses for things. It makes the whole process a bit of a challenge. And knitting while listening to podcasts sounds perfect. Plus you have two more weekend days left.

  11. What a wonderful ordinary day. I wish all my days were like that. Just like you, I too was excited for having an "extra weekend", after having the 4th off. Haha-yes very much like finding unexpected moolah. :)

  12. How perfectly lovely! There is always so much quiet wisdom in your posts. You are so right about old friends and about thriftiness! My mom says that when I was little, I saved up my money to go to the candy store. I bought 57 cents' worth of non-pareils. And asked for a receipt! It's just so much fun to save, and I think it's a wonderful challenge to redecorate using only things you have (or can make out of what you have!) :)
Our 4th was a quiet one too. Eric had two nights of observing at the Palomar telescope, and he made it home in the early evening. We didn't do anything special, but it was great fun to be together again:)

  14. I love thrifting and it's even better when it can be done in your own house! I have been off several days now. I thought TH was SA and FR was SU and now that it is SA, I'm not sure what day it really is.

  15. I do love it when you get bonus days/time!

Isn't it wonderful how distance can't stop a real friendship - my best friend lives quite far away so we don't see eachother often but when we do it's like old times - no awkwardness at all!

Looking forward to seeing your studio - are you going to share some pics?
