Currently on the Needles

I've made great progress on my charcoal shawl.  I haven't managed to memorize any of the pattern except the three stitches on each side that are garter stitch and the purling back on the wrong side.  So I find the knit a challenging one that I must pay attention while chart reading.  I'm loving the wee bit of nylon and bamboo in the wool content as well.  Kind of crunchy?  but smooth.  I think that it is a knitter's thing.

My reading....well I am still reading David Copperfield.  I find the story compelling enough to read at night as well as during the day.  I don't read my ipad in bed, it's not comfortable for me.  So I went exploring in the house to find a copy.  One of the wonderful aspects of my home is that both children are avid readers, avid book collectors.  So although I do not own a personal copy, I found a copy in my daughter's room!

what are you knitting and reading this week?

  1. def. a knitters thing....there is just something about certain yarns! Your shawl is lovely and coming along quite nicely...the color is wonderful! I've got a few kids that are book lovers as well..it's great!

  2. I love that you can search the house and come up with the book you are looking for. I definitely want to read more Dickens, the bits I have read really left me wanting to read others.

  3. It's good to have a challenging knit sometimes- stretch the knitter brain! I haven't knit with bamboo yet. I need to get myself to a physical store and actually feel some yarn with bamboo in it to see if I like the texture at all.

  4. My blanket is the same way. All I know for sure are those 8 stitches on each end . We need to start a group I think!!!

  5. I enjoy a challenging knit, but right now my brain is too overloaded for that. End of the school year is always a crazy time, the weather is nicer so we're outside more... Still knitting, just not as much. :-) Our oldest is a voracious reader and she's always recommending books to me. Love sharing that passion with her!

  6. I know how you love your knitting charts so I'm sure you are enjoying this knit. I like the smooth feeling of a little bamboo and nylon. It makes a wonderful yarn. I recently spun some wool/bamboo/merino and it was so soft.

  8. Oh I forgot to post what book I was listening too! Oops. I always do that. My Spire is the same base as the yarn you are working with. I am enjoying it as well. Good luck with your shawl. I've been in need of a few mindless knits.

  9. Beautiful shawl- and the art of knitting lies so kuch in yarn selection, it's part if what makes us artists! I love all the different possibilities in yarn too. I hope my children are voracious readers too as they get older!

  11. I'm eager to see it all blocked. Love the color. I have a grey skein calling my name!

  12. Oh, I love that shawl! (I'm sure I said the same thing last week.) The color is so beautiful. I have about a million yards of light fingering weight in grey that I bought last year intending to make a sweater for Julia, but it was just a little too fine. Now I'm thinking it would make a nice shawl... xo

  13. Love the knitting. Great color. You are lucky to have a house full of readers. I am sure you never go without a great book.

  14. Oh dear! you are too inspirational for me - another one to add to my list! Can't wait to see it completed :)

  15. Oh your post brought a big smile so wonderful your children are collectors and lovers of books to think you could borrow your own copy from them.

  16. I love your yarn description. The shawl is coming along nicely. I miss the days that our home was full off books and avid readers. I let them dig through the shelves to take their favorites when they moved out and married. The youngest of four is legally blind and Braille books take up quite a bit of shelf space so I am choosing to focus on the positive. Visiting from Yarn along.

  17. Such a pretty shawl. It is great that your children are book lovers. My daughter gives herself reading goals but I don't think a good book is really a joy to her the way it is to me. One summer she started reading books on the New York Times all time best seller list. Right now she is into classics which is why I am currently slogging through Wuthering Heights.

  18. Very pretty yarn. You're making good progress. I'm working on my shawl and sweater. I need to set something aside so I can finish the socks.

  20. I really love gray knitting. I looked up this pattern and the detail of the lace is so intricate, I can't wait to see how it knits up, but yes, I imagine it takes some focus! I'm finishing up one baby sweater, started another and am rotating between three pairs of socks.

  21. Your shawl will be a beautiful accomplishment and, look at that, you're knitting with my favorite color!
I haven't picked up a Dickens novel in years, but I intend to read Great Expectations this year.

  22. Reading in bed at night is the only time I read on my ipad!

  23. That is going to be a beautiful shawl, Karen. I love the color! Our family is made up of avid readers, as well. It makes it nice when it comes to reading material being in abundance. ;)

  25. I always love you yarn along posts. : ) Your shawl is coming along beautifully! Now you've got me wondering if I have a copy of David Copperfield somewhere? There are a lot of books in this house.

  27. hi, Karen! love Dickens ~ do you read and knit at the same time?
    he's not an easy read!!

  28. Isn't it nice, sometimes, to have a knit project that you can't memorize? Such a challenge and delight. :)

  29. I have a pattern like that too and despite trying to focus on it properly I still make a mistake and had to frog! But they are more interesting to knit in the long run :)

  30. I'm making an ever so simple boneyard shawl by Stephen West. One that doesn't require much concentration but hope to do more challenging knitting in the winter. It's great when there are book stashes all around the house...I do exactly the same thing.
    Happy days.

  32. I love how your house is like a library!!

  33. That yarn really is the most satisfying colour. And having a house full of books is pretty satisfying too, isn't it.

I've actually managed a Yarn Along post myself this week, a rare event!

  34. I'm always amazed when someone can tackle complex patterns. I have to stick to simple ones. That yarn is beautiful, and the texture of the shawl is very compelling.

  35. How lucky! I like the feel of a book in my hands too. I am about to start a big one, The Goldfinch, and I'm hoping I can hold it in a way that's comfortable and doesn't squish the baby too much! I love your stitch markers! And the yarn sounds very intriguing! Will love to hear how it feels when it's all finished:)
