The Garden Post

I think we bought too much mulch, as if ever there was a dilemma!  My husband has been spending his evenings spreading the mulch and the pile is getting smaller but there's still a pile.  Yesterday I grabbed the big camera which made Frodo dance and twirl.  He knows I'm going to walk about the yard.  He's well trained now, when I stop to shoot, he stops and waits patiently.  He is completely into capturing the beauty around us.

My stump that is ever so slowly rotting away is a focal point in the front yard.  We were talking about when the right side will fall off, considering perhaps a betting pool.  You know how when there's a baby to be born, people will hazard a guess on the date, weight, and length.  We just want to bet on the date that stump of ours falls apart.  No one wants to put money down as of yet.

Wild blackberries are on the edge of my woods, mostly too sour to eat, but every year we pop one in our mouths just to be sure.  The birds love our generosity when we leave them.

Lamb's ears is my favorite perennial of all and that color of green is the crayola color "sea foam green" that I would gravitate towards over and over as a child. My other crayola favorites were "burnt sienna" and "periwinkle blue".

My butterfly bush is alive!  We thought we might have lost it through the winter and my husband wanted to rip it out.  I begged to let it be.  A few weeks later we had a tiny leave sprout--phew!

And lastly, my little humble vegetable garden that has basil, cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers.  We are about two to three weeks behind planting because of the vacation.

Have you a favorite crayola color?  Please share!!

  1. Plain old Blue was always my favorite Crayola color. The Crayola factory is nearby in Easton, PA and I used to love chaperoning class trips there when my kids were in elementary school. Thanks for a lovely walk around your yard! I'd love to see an end-of-summer update so we can see the stump, butterfly bush, and garden growth!

  2. We are right about where you are, in terms of gardening. Our humble garden is finally in - tomatoes, squash, peppers, basil and marigolds. Still need to mulch. And my favorite crayon: I remember "burnt sienna" from my childhood...I guess it was a sort of brown? I just liked the name. :)

  3. What a well groomed and beautiful garden it looks like you have. And I love the word "Mulch", reminds me of "Gardeners world" Have a nice week!

  4. Can't say that I had a favorite crayola color. I remember our crayons looking very different than the ones here and I don't believe they had individual "names". Ours were in plastic sleeves that could be twisted up, sort of like these: http://www.all4school.de/lyra-wachsmalkreide-capt-n-sharky-mit-schiebehulse-kartonetui-mit-8-st-sortiert.html (Sorry abut the link, but I didn't know how to really explain the look of them.) Love your garden and the veggie beds!

  5. Well, as a child I loved magenta and yellow-green (not green-yellow, which is more yellow than green--I always wondered why they named these two confusing crayons that way). Your stump bet made me laugh, because we have a tree in our yard that has been dying for the past several years. This year, my husband I bet whether or not it would get any leaves at all. I bet no, he bet yes. I tried to collect my winnings this weekend, but he says I have to wait until the end of the summer. : )
Loved this glimpse into your garden!

  6. Good luck with the raised garden beds. A garden always looks so sad in June, but by August it looks amazing!

  9. Karen, everything around your home looks lovely! Those stumps can sometimes take a very long time to completely rot up. We had some trees removed from our property in order to have a ditch filled in. That was about 12 years ago and there is still a part of one of the stumps down at the burn pile. I'm so glad your butterfly bush came back! My husband threatened our one apple tree last fall that if it didn't bear fruit this year it was going to be cut down. It did the same thing your butterfly bush did...there may be only a few apples on the tree, but there are apples! :) Loved seeing your veggie beds, too. All of those wonderful goodies that make our salads taste delicious! Have a lovely day, Karen.

  10. Too much mulch? I wish we had that problem. We bought six big bags of it (picture George pulling them in our red wagon back from the garden co-op...) and it's taken four to do the one little bit of our front yard. I think we'll need at least another six...

Your vegetables look great! We were *so* far behind in planting last year but still did pretty well; I imagine you'll do fine with just being a bit late.

(I don't have a favorite Crayola color! I only ever had the eight-pack of crayons & they were just red, orange, yellow, etc. I know they have fun names now but I've never seen them.) xo

  11. You can send some of that mulch over here :) Everything looks great, and even with a late start, it will catch up quickly.

  12. We've had a couple of tree stumps that eventually dissolved (it took a long time tho)...
My favorite crayon color as a child was magenta. And there was one that I can't remember the name of that was sort of a darkish blue/green...

Linda in VA (who still loves to color)!

  13. I love periwinkle blue (even painted the guest bedroom that color), many of the greens and yellows and oranges. Kind of like yarn...so many colors...so little time.

  14. It's got to be that periwinkle blue! Popular, isn't it? :) Love your woods and that your butterfly bush is growing!

  16. how funny....burnt sienna was always my favorite crayola color...not so much for the color but I LOVED the name!!!

  17. Nice garden! Maybe you can call in a woodpecker to help with that stump? Like Steph, I was intrigued by the burnt sienna and also like Prussian blue. Don't really know why!

  18. Yes! Sea foam green! You brought back so many memories with that crayon color! My faves were cerulean (which I never pronounced correctly), cornflower, and purple mountain majesty. Your garden looks wonderful too. :)
