Currently on the Needles

You might have noticed that my sweater is the same size as last week, well I hit a tiny snafu.  I forgot to do some crucial increasing on the back portion of the sweater which resulted in ripping out 20 rows of knitting.  I'm happy I found my silly error and even though ripping out is a sad event, I'm happy to be back on track and making up for lost knitting time.

I finished one sock and cast on the other.  I have never had second sock syndrome.....I love starting the second one because the first one is patiently waiting for its mate.  I'm curious, do you have trouble starting and finishing the second sock?  Or are you a two at a time sock knitter?

I finished my book from last week, The Maid's Version, and enjoyed the plot over all.  The author unfolded the story by revealing bits and pieces to a mystery. The writing style was similar to Faulkner but with punctuation and a little more sense.

I started The Book Thief, which I have read many years ago when it was first published.  I loved the story first time around.  Last week, I watched the movie version and now I'm curious to see how closely did the director followed the plot of the book.  I also have The Scarlett Letter on my kindle and I'm nearly finished.  I never read this classic and felt that I should!!

What are you knitting and reading this week?

  1. Lovely color way on the socks Karen- really like the earthy feel. I have wanted to read the Book Thief for some time...thanks for the tip/reminder.
    Happy Knitting!

  2. I have a turtle neck poncho I've been knitting for years and every so often I have to take out rows because I forget where I am! I just finished a super warm winter hat and cannot wait to wear it!

Love socks! and agree that making the second one brings a pair together. :)

I'm reading Breadcrumbs. It's a middle readers book. Love them for easy reading and great imaginations!

  3. You calm approach to knitting projects is something I admire so much in you Karen. Really, knitting is suppose to be calming right? I have never had 2nd sock syndrome either, but then I always knit my socks side by side because I am always afraid I might develop it, ha, ha.

  4. I need to capture your non- second sock attitude:)))

  5. oh, that ripping thing.....just ripped the better part of the leg of a sock.....so this time round, it will be almost like knitting 3 to get 2. Don't usually have the second sock syndrome...as in a single lies lonely for years. weeks, maybe, but #2 usually gets done in a reasonable amount of time. (I need to revisit some old favorite books, too)

  6. I've never had second sock syndrome either. Mine are knit one at a time, but normally I'm excited to get started on the second sock so I can add another pair to my "stash" or give them away. I started on the newest Ann Rice book "Prince Lestat" and love it. I am a huge Ann Rice fan. :-)

  7. I need to reread The Book Thief too ... haven't decided if I want to do it before or after seeing the movie. :)

    1. I chose after!! I read all the HP books before the movie and then sat through the movie thinking about what was missing. I watched the book thief and thoroughly enjoyed the movie so now I'll critique the movie with the original :)

  8. No problems here with 2nd socks, although I don't knit them very often. I'm finished with my orange yarn and am moving toward it's cousin...brown. :) Happy knitting!

  9. i'm having a first sock syndrome... so i'm sticking with my dishcloths LOL. My kids and i read the book thief a while ago and really enjoyed it. All three of us think that the movie was well done.

  10. I never read the Book Thief but am adding it to my list. I don't have second sock syndrome. Most often I am anxious to cast on the next sock and get it done so I can wear them.

  11. Thanks for the book ideas. I'm always looks for good books to read. I knit one sock at a time and it's no problem. The second sock always seems faster because I'm halfway there.

  12. My only problem starting the second sock comes when I didn't really enjoy the yarn or pattern of the first sock. I try to cast on right after finishing the first, so I don't have a break between. The Book Thief is on my list too.

  13. How exactly to you rip out 20 rows of knitting? When I discover my errors (usually knitting when I should have pearled) I am only a row away so I slowly back those stitches off the right and put them on the left. I'm afraid to just "rip" them, I might lose it all! :)
I've not read The Book Thief yet. Daughter said it was good but I've never got around to it.
Socks, as you know are something I aspire to!!!!!

  14. I am knitting my first pair of socks in ages. I am part way through the first, I have not had second sock syndrome in the past hope it doesn't happen this time. It is a pain to rip out stitches but thank goodness it was only 20 rows and not more :)

  15. I imagine I'll have some second sock syndrome, if I ever get around to knitting socks ;-) I guess I have first sock syndrome. Every time I see The Book Thief I think I should read it - I'll be putting a hold on it today.

  16. I hate tearing out but always feel a sense of relief once I have! Glad you noticed the problem earlier than later!!

  17. It's always a good feeling to get back to the point in your knitting where you were when you had to rip. I have lots of experience in this area. :-)

I'm currently working on Bluebells, a sweater from the Yokes book by Kate Davies. I'm trying to settle into a book right now. I've started several, but need to make up my mind which one I'm going to focus on.

  18. Love the colours of the sock, a real delight. I am struggling to get back into crochet at the moment I have lots of ideas but no enthusiasm.

  19. I haven't got myself together enough this week to post one time, but I am knitting on the never ending shawl and reading The Miniaturist, which is not really very good.

  20. Good way to think about the second sock :-).

  21. I've just learnt a new word from you Karen..."snafu" love it! Glad that you are back on track with your gorgeous orange sweater. I just love that cheerful colour. I love knitting socks and am anxious to get it's partner finished too. But have to admit that I usually knit really simple ones...maybe I wouldn't be as anxious to finish if it was a more complex pattern. I must get some on the needles it's a while since I made any. I have still to watch and read the book thief...so much to look forward to.
    Happy knitting,

  22. I read the book thief a few months back and then saw the movie afterwards. I was really disappointed with the movie but that's usually the case when I read the book first. The books are always better.

  23. I have never read The Book Thief but I see everyone reading it. I think I should give it a try. Your socks are always so lovely. I really should sock knitting a try.

  24. I loved the Book Thief too. Happy knitting!

  25. I have terrible second sock syndrome, or second sleeve, or anything second...right now I have one almost finished sweater - but it's been waiting for second sleeve for 3 months :D ...we'll see if it ever gets one...
I love the color of your sweater - ripping 20 rows sucks, but it could have been worse if you didn't notice the mistake :) good luck with your projects

  26. So sorry you had to rip back, but so glad you found the error when you did! I have never knit a pair of socks. I really want a nice, warm, soft pair of handknit socks, but I don't know if I can stick with the little needles and sock yarn for very long. Looking forward to reading The Maid's Version. Thanks for the suggestion! *hugs* :)

  27. I am frozen on a sweater that I started last year and restarted this year. I am so afraid I'll screw up! :) I loved The Book Thief; I haven't watched the movie yet but I have it on my DVD. I recall it getting good reviews in the paper when it came out. I am currently reading "A House in the Sky" which is a memoir written by a woman who was held captive in Somali for 450 days. It is an engrossing read!

  28. at least you did not frog your entire sweater...as I did.
I will start a new read tonight..but what???? Hmmm IM off to browse the books on my daughters nook that she sent to me

  29. Hmm...that book seems to be around a bit, might have to check it out. Sorry about the ripping out, but at least you caught it :) Happy knitting!

  30. Ahhh...I knit two at a time usually to avoid any desire to move onto another project before getting my pair of socks. I am surprised you have never read The Scarlet Letter. It was part of sophomore English class in high school. I love rereading books I read as a youth. I find my perspective is different and I gain so much more from the story.

  31. The second sock...the second mitten...the second glove.... If it weren't for the fact that it is absolutely necessary to do two instead of one, I would definitely be stopping at one!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I sure like the color of your sweater. This week I am knitting the second of Align Fingerless Mitts, the "Red Robin Shawlette" and a wee sleeve for a baby sweater. I just began to read "Me Before You" for February gathering of book group and "Braiding Sweetgrass," nonfiction about Indigenous Wisdom and plants. Braiding Sweetgrass is very nontraditional but interesting.

  33. I love the picture! I also hate pulling out my knitting, but sometimes it has to get done. :) The Book Thief looks good, I'll put that on my reading list.

  34. Ouch ripping 20 rows! But you'll forget about that soon :) ooh I love the earthy feel of those socks! I don't knit two at a time (tried that once and wasn't a succes) and occasionally I do suffer from second sock syndrome. The best way to cure that is to get over it and start the second sock :D

  35. So annoying for you to have to frog the jumper back, it will be worth it though because the yarn is a beautiful colour! The sock is wonderful too, I can totally see why it would motivate you to get on with the second one, although I fear that I would start wearing the first one while I was waiting for the other one!! xx

  36. It does feel good to "get it right" after a snafu and to get back on track. I can't wait to see that orange beauty finished. I've only made one pair of socks... they just don't excite me like some other things. I think I have finally honed in on a pattern I want to knit... now, for the perfect yarn. I NEED to get my knitting mojo back. blessings ~ tanna

  37. How irritating having to frog back on your sweater. At least you noticed the mistake earlier on rather than after casting off or something.

I don't think I get second sock syndrome but I tend to work on socks quite slowly so maybe that makes a difference

    ReplyDelete
  38. I still have to knit some socks... :) so sorry about the sweater snafu! glad you caught it though!!! Blessings to you!

  39. I've never knitted socks, it always looks so complicated! Simple knitting only here. I probably should expand my horizons. The Book Thief has been on my reading list for a long time, I think I should probably see the film first.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I definitely have Second Sock Syndrome. Actually I may just have a 'can't finish a pair of socks to save my life' syndrome.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I do suffer from second sock syndrome sometimes, especially when it comes to plain vanilla socks. Therefore I like to knit two at a time if the pattern is very simple.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'm a two-at-a-time sock knitter...even on DPNs I have 2 sets :) I just love the feeling of completing the entire project and being able to put them on. Right now, I'm knitting a pair of fingerless mitts and have to do them 1 at a time and they are going ok, in fact, I loved the first one so much I could hardly wait to start the second.
