Currently on the Needles

I started a cowl with some lovely aran weight wool.  Yup, I'm on size nine needles which is unheard of for me.  I love how quick this knit is going.  Super fast :)  I chose the reversatile cowl for my pattern and the only modification so far is eliminating the double wrap on one of the purl rows. Oh and if you haven't see the sweater I finished, I posted about it here.

I finished Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore and loved it.  I highly recommend this read if you like a fast paced plot, solving puzzles, books, computers, and nerdy stuff.  Earlier this week, I started to read The Peach Keeper so far, I'm enjoying the story.  Nice and easy read.

What are you knitting and reading this week?

  1. Size 9 needles feel huge don't they? The blanket I am working is on size 9's and I have decided I like size 6 and smaller.
I just added your books to my list!

  5. Sometimes you just have to knit something that seems to fly off the needles. Instant gratification! :-) Sounds like a good book, need to add it to my list.

  8. I always have something on bigger needles while I'm knitting little things like baby cardigans at the same time. Sometimes I just need to feel like I'm making a lot of progress in just a little bit of time. Ah, the joy of big needles and big yarn. :)

Just check out your sweater - what a beauty! I'm trying to decide on a cardigan pattern for myself. This one may be a contender.

  9. switching to a bigger or smaller size is always an adjustment/surprise hey? a fun one though! looking forward to seeing this cowl when it's done! the book you finished does sound intriguing! Blessed beginning of Lent, btw! :)

  10. I am still using more of the larger needles. My work hasn't went down to the tiny sizes yet. I have them though and some sock yarn... just waiting until I get brave enough to try it! :)

  11. I will have to check those books, the bookstore one sounds super intriguing! I'm reading Eleanor & Park right now, and loving it a lot!

  12. Fun pattern! It looks like just the thing for the weather you've been having. I might have to make one for DD#2 and my sister. Right now I'm reading a library book on my Kindle that I checked out from our library here while we were in Florida. (That was fun!) It's by Randy Wayne White, a Florida author.

  13. I have been knitting on #1 dpns which are so, so tiny! Big needles make for quick projects, for sure. I'm off to see if our library has that book! :)

  16. Yay for big needles. They help when you are stuck on lots of little needle projects. I find myself geting bored of socks all the time. Good idea to mix it up a bit!

  17. Hi Karen! Hope all is well. What I am reading this week is "Having a Mary heart in a Martha World", Finding intimacy with God in the Busyness of Life, by Joanna Weaver. I really like it. And, on my needles is a Sockhead Hat for our grandson. I believe this is the one you make for your son?? I'm almost ready to switch to the DPN's. I like having some 'no brainer knitting' going on right now! LOL. I did finish my Nobel Cowl, but have to weave in the ends, then I'll be posting my pic on my Ravelry. I would like to make another for my daughter. Have a great day!! I'm off to play with a quilting project!

  20. I love the cowl pattern and hadn't seen this one before...great that it's a free one too. Glad to have another book recommendation to add to the list as well. I'm still experimenting with Ahmad's lopi yarn which is also aran weight.
    Happy big needle knitting.

  21. I love thick yarn and big needles. Makes me feel like I am accomplishing something!

  22. I too have just started an Aran project and it is whizzing along ... I'm only a few rows in but it took no time at all. For a person who normally knits with fingering and lace weight it almost feels like cheating. I'll put a pic on the blog later.

  23. A little speed knitting is a fun thing. ;) Beautiful shade of gray for the cowl but I'm still drooling over the sweater! blessings ~ tanna

  25. 9??? NINE????? you've got to be kidding!! (guess we'll be seeing an FO really FAST the way you whip through projects!!!!....but at least it will be done before winter is finished, right????) I really like the color. And I guess I'm going to have to look into that book. (It's killing me today to have the whole day of 'excused' leisure----and not be able to see the print on the page----and my book is really good!!! Eyes are slightly less dilated, so it's getting better, although now I can't see with my glasses----and without, my arms just aren't quite long enough. I'd have it made if I were a monkey.)

  26. Oh I love quick knits... enjoy! I can't wait to hear your final thoughts on The Peach Keeper, it's on my list to read :)

  28. I loved the Peach Keeper, and actually just finished her latest book Lost Lake, and one of her first books The Sugar Queen....all of them were great! Enjoy knitting with those big needles :)

  29. I always think having at least one project on big needles (or a crochet project) can be a welcome relief from fingering weight knitting. Every few projects, I just have to switch to a bulky yarn project so it can go quickly :)

  30. Love the color of the cowl, it will turn out beautiful! I think the next book, I'll read is the Mr.Penumbra's bookstore! :)
