Even though I'm knee deep in a Hitofude cardigan knit, I cast on a new project.  I'm making a blanket for my nephew's baby and went into deep yarn stash to find this worsted weight cotton.  I love this simple garter stitch rib pattern and how effortlessly the blanket is knitting up.

I am reading short stories by Flannery O'Connor.  I bought this book last year while on vacation and it's been patiently waiting for me to start reading.  I guess I'd like to read one short story a week as a personal reading goal.  I want to savor the writing.  On my kindle I'm reading Persuasion by Jane Austen and haven't made as much progress as I'd like.

What are you knitting and reading this week?

  1. Flannery O'Conner works her way into my soul. Persuasion is a great read, too. I'm just starting out with two new books, Mink River and How to be both. I'll see where they take me.

  2. O-o-o-h Karen, I am loving the blanket, the design and the color. I'm glad there is some baby knitting in your days, it's the best.
Enjoy your book, I think of Amanda [Habit of Being] every time I see Flannery's name. :)

  3. a baby blanket is a nice break from the hitofude ( the color you are using for that cardi is one of my favorites!!)....and baby things are usually done in surprisingly short order. Enjoy the journey.

  6. You are such a prolific knitter!! I'm still knitting away on my little summer top, but I only have a few more rows to go. There's just not enough time in the day for me to knit right now, isn't that sad?

  8. Oooooh, I love that book. It's been awhile since I've reread it and so I need to break it out soon. I consider Flannery a dear friend. :)

  13. I have seen so much blue today! Baby knitting is always such a joy and finishes quickly, too. Enjoy your weekly with Flannery, Karen. I might need to pick that up as I'm trying to expose my wanna-write-a-novel kids to the idea of writing "short" stories instead of going for a novel. :)

  21. That blanket is going to be beautiful! As your blog was loading up and I caught a glimpse of your book I was totally transported back to 1st year English in college. Can't beat short stories as a reading goal - good luck!

  24. Your blanket is going to be gorgeous Karen. I picked up a book of short stories on my last library trip, I have never been drawn to short stories, always preferring the long novel, but you know what I loved them. They are lovely to squeeze in here and there, and I am not left wondering what is going to happen next the way I am when I am reading a novel. They are easy to pick up and put down, much like some of my knitting :)

Happy knitting and reading Karen. xo

  25. That looks like a nice cozy blanket for a new baby or even a toddler. I also think simple patterns are nice. I'm reading Lila by Marilynne Robinson. Her unique style of writing is beautiful. I am knitting some wild and crazy striped socks from Knit Picks Fellici and a pullover sweater, Aggie. I am a little nervous about the fit of the sweater. Another row or two and I will be putting it on waste yarn to make sure the armhole is deep enough. Wish me luck!

  28. That's going to be a very pretty blanket! And you already know I love your Hitofude. I just started Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close; it's different.

  29. love how your yarn and book cover match so seamlessly (that's my new favourite word) It's good to alternative more complicated patterns with those that are more simple pick an put down projects. This is a lovely one.
I've put down my simple sweater pattern because it's got to the divide for sleeves bit so I need to concentrate and my head is full of paint shades and preparation for a weekend visitor. I'm still loving "The tenderness of wolves" by Stef Penney and in no rush to finish it quickly. I want to savor the words too.
