See that candy corn?  Just so you know it is not healthy nor does it have an ounce of nutritional value but I cannot resist a tiny piece. One of the best foods of October :)

My knitting has turned into some holiday knitting.  I finished the super secret project that I cannot talk about and then cast on a hat for another present.  However, I can say it's a hat and it is my own invention.  The yarn is an antique, if a yarn could be an antique.  The skein was in my mother's stash and that has to be well over 20 years ago.  Wool is wool!!

I started reading Gone Girl , I know, I know I said I would NOT read this book but my son made the book sound really good and he promised me it is not graphic.  If it is, I'll never believe anything he says ever again.  I finished The Remains of the Day and while it was good, there were times I was bored with some of the writing. I'm glad I read it, so give it a flip through.  Also if you like Downton Abbey this book might interest you as well.

What are you knitting and reading?

  1. Such a pretty color yarn. I think I have several antique skeins of yarn in my stash. As for candy corn....I don't buy it because I would be the only one eating it.

  3. Such a lovely, pure pink. That's the wonderful thing about good wool, it lasts forever and ages beautifully. Looking forward to learning more about your super secret projects when you can reveal the details ; )

  4. Looking forward to the reveal of the secret knitting. I keep seeing candy corn all over blogland and I can honestly say that I have never had the pleasure, how strange is that?

  5. The yarn looks in incredibly good condition for 20 years old!
The ending of Gone Girl was not what I expected. It's not graphic, you can keep your faith in your son. My friend tells me that the film is much better than the book, which is interesting as I find it's normally the other way around.
I remember reading Remains of the Day and being a little bored in places too, the film was also very slow moving, but enjoyable enough to keep me reading / watching.

  6. Dan and my kids would all be so happy if I brought a small bag of candy corn home from the grocery store later today... Oh, I guess. :) How fun that you're knitting with a skein of yarn from your mom's stash! And your own design?!! I love designing my own beanies and look forward to seeing what you've come up with.

  7. Wow. Your mom's pink wool! That is pretty cool. Did you get to knit with your mom a lot back in the day? And does your daughter also knit? I heard knitting sometimes skips a generation.

  8. I can't believe that it is secret knitting time already! I do love the colour of your yarn, very pretty :)

  12. Do report back on Gone Girl......I haven't read that one for probably the same reasons you've avoided it. Good color for an 'antique' yarn!!!! :)

  13. I'll be waiting to hear your review of Gone Girl. So far I've given it a pass. As for candy corn, I have to confess I like to sample it at this time of the year too. Now for a warning. Read this next sentence at your own risk!!! Have you tried the candy corn popcorn? That stuff is amazing. And very, very addictive.

  16. I have been resisting the call of the Candy Corn! They looks so good. How neat that you have yarn from your moms stash!

  17. I have to say candy corn is a treat I can do without - chocolate on the other hand is something I don't even buy because I have no self control. Your antique yarn looks very pretty and I can't wait to see the hat you've invented.

  18. My Mike loves candy corn, I'm not much of a fan.
Gone Girl, ahem, I read it and now look forward to hearing your view.
The yarn from your Mama's stash is beautiful Karen and I now it must feel so special to use it.

  23. Candy corn? Enlighten me..........

That is a great colour and how wonderful that it has survived so long without being eaten by moths :)

    Enjoy your book!

  24. I like a little bit of candy corn - but more than that and it gets me feeling weird. I do like the chocolate candy corn a lot tho! I saw the other day somewhere that if you put candy corn and peanuts in a jar and wait a few days or so - it is supposed to taste like Pay Days....

  25. Luckily for me, I am not a big candy corn fan, so thankfully I am not tempted! ;) (Other halloween candy, though ...)

I love finding and using "vintage" yarn! So fun. :)

  26. This yarn looks brand new, not 20+ years old. Yay on the completion of some holiday knitting. I am reading The King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner and started The Blood of Olympus a bit this morning while Xeroxing for Jellybean's teacher. Knitting the same ol.

  27. Antique yarn...awesome. I love it. And the package, very contemporary looking label. How lovely to knit from your mama's stash. I love the colour too. For some reason I'm in such a pink mood these days. Maybe because I'm still knitting the charcoal sweater for Ahmad and longing for something more colourful. Good luck with the book. I hope that you enjoy it. It's good to sometimes read thinks you wouldn't necessarily choose yourself.
    Enjoy,

  28. yay for old yarn! it's lovely! hope the book is OK! you read a lot!

  29. Twenty years - antique. That's funny!
    I haven't read Gone Girl.

  30. A tiny piece? I grabbed a handful last night.

  31. That's quite an unusual pink, I really like it! Have you seen the film of The Remains of the Day, with Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson? Apologies if you have already discussed it! They made two films together (the other was Howard's End) and I mix them up hopelessly. They're both good though!

  32. p.s. we don't have Candy Corn in the UK, what does it taste like? Does it have a flavour, or is it just sweet, like a Haribo or something? I see it all over blogland at this time of year, and I know that Americans are associating the sight with the taste, but I cannot!

    1. soft and very sugary (almost gaggy sugary...) It's good in small doses but yucky in high doses.

  33. I'm trying to figure out my holiday knitting plan, too. I just got X by Sue Grafton from the libray on my Kindle but have only read the Prologue.

  34. I am trying so hard to stay away from the candy corn. I have not read that book - another for my list of books to explore.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I love the color of your latest project! I am reading "The Photograph" by Beverly Lewis - an Amish novel. I like them because I know there isn't going to be anything graphic or violent and sometimes, I just need to read about a simpler place and time and problems that are solved through prayer and scripture reading. I will have to check out Gone Girl. Please tell us what you think when you are through. Have a great weekend.

  36. I am a sucker for candy corn too! And I want to start my holiday knitting... thanks for helping to motivate me!

  37. Awesome vintage yarn! I just tried to wash some 1980s stuff I picked up in a charity shop and it made all my washing smell fusty...sigh. I'm now trying to remember how graphic Gone Girl is! I read the book then watched the movie and barely remember them so I'm guessing not very?

  38. How exciting that you are knitting with 'antique' yarn! I love the pink colour. I'm currently reading 'Three Bags Full', which I can really recommend so far if you haven't read it already.

  39. is the leaf on your table a coaster? cute! everyone loves your pink yarn but it looks more lavender on my screen. Still a pretty color
