Currently on the Needles

I'm reading two books and they are both the same.  They are both slow going as well, partly because of me and partly because of the full house.  I am not finding much time to read!!   Station Eleven is coming along and I love the writing style.  My other book is One Thousand Gifts and that is inching along.

My knitting has been here and there as well.  I've been leaning towards quick projects.  The hat on the right is finished and came out a wee bit small.  I'm hoping a severe blocking session will make it bigger.  The wool is super wash and that tends to grow for me.  The hat on the left is making me quite happy to knit as well!!  Lovely pattern :)

The origami butterfly was made by my son, who has been making all sorts of paper creatures scattered around the house.  I'm thinking of hanging them all on the tree.

What are you knitting and reading this week?

  6. Must be the season for hats, I just finished one as well. Thought about knitting another one, but some very colorful sock yarn was calling my name. I'm reading "All creatures great and small" by James Harriot. I used to love the series growing up and when I found the book at our library for sale couldn't resist it.

  14. You and Tracey are both reading Station Eleven which is a good indication I need to check it out. I'm also putting both those hat patterns on my favorites in ravelry! I am really in the mood to make some hats too. I have read and reread 1000 Gifts because I loved it so much. I know some people don't like her writing style but I love it and the content of the book is just what I need reminding of pretty often!

    1. Karen, it's her writing style that gets to me, but the content is so genuinely expressed that you just have to stick with it. Ann's writing has influenced me greatly (as I've written elsewhere), and I hope it's a blessing to you as well.
      xo Lisa :)

  21. I love the hats! I haven't tried cable knitting yet but it’s on my 'to do' list. ;) I read One Thousand Gifts a few years ago and it made my mother's and my poetry lover's heart swell. Although I grew up Catholic and have since chosen a new path, but that didn’t stop me from being awed by her ways of seeing the blessings in so many things. I ended up buying the book and keeping it in my nightstand. :) The boys and I just recently began some origami projects and we are having so much fun. Now I want us to make butterflies! I love your idea of stringing them up!

  22. Such pretty hats! I love the colorwork pattern on the right one. I'm excited to see how your Father Cables hat comes out; I loooooove cables, and that pattern in my queue.

"Station Eleven" was one of my favorite reads this year. I think you'll get more invested in the story once you have time to really sit down and read. I loved the beautiful writing and the story was so unique.

  23. Nice Hats! Now I need to check the patterns. I should be reading John Adams, but just started book 1 of the Wagons West series......easily distracted, aren't I?

    Happy knitting!

  27. Those are two beautiful hats. Fingers crossed blocking helps the black and white one. I pulled an old friend off my bookshelf. I am rereading "The Hatbox Letters."

  28. Both hats are just perfect for this winter...if it ever gets here :-/

  29. I made a last minute for Bryan for Christmas and it was too big. It's in the goodwill pile now. It will be good for someone who will actually wear it.

  30. Such beautiful hats! I hope the one blocks enough so you can wear it. I am leaning towards mindless knitting--a hat for myself and a poncho. Tomorrow the decorations come down and I am dreading the job and also getting used to my house with nothing special in it---I started decorating for Fall on Labor Day weekend and then moved right into Christmas decorating. I hope you show us pictures of the origami in a little tree-how cute! I have several books listed on my blog today which I hope to read soon! Happy New Year!

  32. Gorgeous knitting - I hope the small one stretches for you.

I read a thousand gifts a few years ago and though there were aspects of it I loved, I struggled to finish it. I like the way Ann lives with attention and gratitude for the small blessings in life, and the way she is open to learning from all experience, but I find her writing too much in anything more than small doses.

Happy New Year to you and your family Karen xx

Happy New Year to you and yours Karen x

  34. My girls are into origami too! Well they were when the 8 year old got two sets for Christmas. There's a whole bunch of cranes sitting here. I'm sure the hat will loosen up.

  35. The hats look lovely! So annoying that one doesn't fit right but hopefully it can be saved! :)
