Forest

My sister and I went for a hike just the two of us on Saturday afternoon last weekend. For some reason I read the map very wrong.  I thought it was a paved trail, and it was not.  At first it was marked and we were happily following the dirt foot path through the forest.  Chatting and gabbing away the minutes.

There was a point in our walk that we were both thinking "are we on the trail still".  The markings were gone!  We would walk and wonder and ignore the slight panic of what if we are lost.  I did have my cell phone but there's isn't any reception (fat good that would do).  So we followed what we thought was a path.

Thank goodness for the graffiti artists that love to carve hearts and who they love on the trees.  That was the only way we knew we were heading somewhere where other hikers have ventured.  Still no markings from the state park officials though.

Suddenly my sister was thrilled to see a tree that she remembers.  I quickly said there was no possible way to remember a tree!  in a forest, please!  But she did remember-she pulled out her camera and showed that tree.  Miracle.  We had walked the loop, shortly after our landmark tree riddled with woodpecker holes we saw our trail sign.  That feeling of not knowing was scary but kind of fun and breathtaking.  Life was adventurous that afternoon.

have a great weekend!!

  4. Well, at least you two were together. Sister adventures are so wonderful, even when they are awful because she's there, you know? Lovely place to get lost. Have a great weekend!

  5. What a wonderful adventure! We did something similar at the lavender farm near my parents' house this summer—thought we might be horribly lost but it turned out we'd walked in a big circle. I love that your sister recognized a *tree*, of all things…! xo

  7. Lovely pictures. I've done this myself. Not a good feeling knowing you are potentially getting yourself lost. Phew for your sister's memory.

  14. That happened to the kids and I earlier this summer! I had all four of them - baby in the sling, and dragging the 3-year-old along. And cell phone back in car - yikes. What turned out to be 1/2 hour walk turned into 2 1/2 hour hike in unknown woods - very scary! So glad for those graffiti artists for you and your sister's peace of mind :)
