Knitting Notions

I thought today I'd share with you what is in my knitting bag, my essentials for knitting on the go.  First off I'm carrying a set of double pointed needles size 7 because they're short and wooden and perfect for catching slippery stitches when I unknit or drop down a few rows to fix an error.  The needles in the photo are Brittany and were a gift from my dad and step mom quite a bit ago.  They are my only wooden needles.  Next up is my needle sizer, which is an heirloom because it was my mom's sizer.  I love how it is a bit worn and bent.    The cable needles are from knit picks, I own so many brands but these I love because of the grooves and the colors!

No knitter should be caught without some form of moisturizing!  I have many lotions and potions scattered through out the house and a knitter needs one in their bag.  This moisturizing stick was purchased in Cape May, NJ and every time I use it I am transported back to a beach and a vacation.  Lip balm is also a must for me.  This tiny tube was a gift and is home made or locally made location unknown to me.

Next up are various stitch markers, I've quite the collection.  For lace projects I use knit picks metal stitch markers as well as all the wonderful ones my sister made.  If you do not own locking stitch markers you should, I have a set from Clover and from Hiya Hiya!  These are perfect for keeping track of increases and decreases, I use these instead of pen and paper.  I wish I could remember my darning needle brand but right now I'm drawing a blank, I rely on it's pointy-ness to bury ends effortlessly on my lace projects.

Finishing a project?  how about some puppy snips??  Love mine.

Last but not least is a measuring tape.  Whenever my husband goes to conventions he always brings back free tape measures with various advertisements.  I've own beautiful expensive ones but I tend to break them so I rely on his generosity to supply the free ones.  I think I measure too much :)

Do you have a must have?  I'd love to hear what you think is needed for a knitting project on the go!!

  1. If have learned what are my must haves in my on the go knitting bag by trial and error...not having what I need when I need it :) Little scissors, stitch markers, tape measure, and some extra needles.

I love the needle sizer, didn't know there was such a thing, will have to get one.

    And yes on the moisturizer.

  2. What a great post! I needed this ;) My bag is more crochet oriented but I was just thinking yesterday there must be some neat knitting notions out there calling my name. Def need those puppy snips (awesome stocking stuff, don't you think?) and I love your mom's gauge. I am clinging to my pen and paper on these first few novice knitting projects but it's good to look forward, right? I will buy more stitch markers!

  3. Oooh I love these kind of posts! And I've never heard of those little puppy snips - they're fabulous and I need to see if I can get my hands on some.

In addition to your listed items I absolutely 100% must have in my knitting bag: a nail file (knitting with a rag nail = the most irritating thing ever), an erasable red pencil (for making notes on and annotating my pattern), a tiny plastic bag of offcuts (because I don't use stitch marker rings, instead I make loops), and a bar of soap, still in the wrapper, to keep my balls of wool smelling lovely and deter any moths.

And not too far from hand must always be a photocopier (because I scribble all over my patterns, so prefer to work off a copy) and my cheap electronic kitchen scales (have I got enough wool left for one more set of stripes? the other sleeve? a longer border?)!

  7. I love this post Karen and will have to show you mine soon.
I always keep a crochet needle in my bag for picking up stitches and a stitch counter.

  8. Everything looks so pretty laid out that way! When I did a lot of knitting on the go, I used to use those little stoppers for the end of your needles, to keep stitches from slipping off, but rubber bands work just as well!

  9. What a great knitting bag. I have several bags and yet they never seem near at hand when needed...ugh. Love the puppy snips!

  10. My collection is similar to yours ... asst. sizes of darning needles, fine crochet hooks for adding beads, cable needles, safety pins, small circular stitch markers (nothing that dangles), scissors, lengths of wool for provisional cast ons, and a tape measure.

    Great post Karen :)

  11. Oh my gosh, I love those little scissors! Have you been able to get them through airport security? I suppose with the most recent changes, they're probably okay now...my notions kit looks very similar to yours! Except my stitch markers always disappear somehow and aren't as nicely organized!

  12. Well, our bag of "stuff" looks pretty similar. My lotion is from the body shop and has olive oil in it, but isn't greasy. I am thoroughly addicted to it and it was first given to me by a fellow knitter....she's a smart one ;)

  13. I always have a crochet hook to catch those darn dropped stitches. And maybe a safety pin or two. I'm usually left without something that I need and will have to search for it.

  14. What a great post. I just recently got a little bag together to carry my little knitting items in. I knit it and lined it with fabric. I have many of the things shown above but I never thought of little scissors ( I might need a pair because they are much safer) or a form of moisturizer! Thank you for sharing.

  16. This post has definitely reminded me I need to organize my notions. I'm with you, a firm believer in stitch markers, open and closed, tape measure and moisturizer. The rest is in rotation, as needed, except ... I'm so disorganized right now, I can't say I'd find it easily if I was running out the door. Thanks for the inspiration.
