Weekends

Our local library had a book sale on Friday, my husband and I adopted books that needed to be loved again.  My choices were stringent.  You see, I have books overflowing in this house.  I've even purged some off the shelves for others to read.  I was selective, strategic and successful.  Four books were worthy of adoption.

Saturday we went to an organic farmer's market.  It was our first time visiting, the drive was picture perfect with fields of farm animals and the quiet you hear in the country.  The market had a great feeling to it.  I loved that everyone there was interested whole food living. We browsed, we contemplated and we bought a few items.  Now that I know what is available, my grocery shopping list will be altered once again to accommodate "real food".  We did splurge on some raw cheese for him.  He says it's delicious and I'm not brave enough to try some (lactose intolerance).

Yesterday was novel reading, knitting, sitting and talking outside.  Laundry was started and finished-with only two people there isn't much, not that I'm complaining.  I'm enjoying the slowness of summer.  For dinner, I made a spinach pesto pasta with fresh snow peas from the market.  It captured summer in every delicious bite.

Spinach Pesto:  In a food processor combine:  1/3 cup of parmesan cheese
                                                                           1/4 cup of olive oil
                                                                           2 tbs lemon juice
                                                                           1/2 tsp garlic powder
                                                                           1 tsp italian seasoning
1/4 cup of toasted slivered almonds
                                                                           spinach leaves-approximately two handfuls?

mix together and add more oil if necessary to the consistency you want.  I toss this with 1/2 pound of cooked pasta.

How was your weekend?

  1. Sounds like a perfect weekend Karen with all the things I love. Ours was quieter too, the first in ages with no visiting or visitors.

I love Tess of the D'urbervilles. I know it's not everyones cup of tea and some people get frustrated with Tess's behaviour but I love the setting and the romance.

The produce market sounds lovely too, and the pasta recipe. I've got a soup on the hob at the moment with similar ingredients, minus the pasta.

  2. great book choices, although the Colum McCann is the only one I've read (and it was good!!!); I need to dive into some of the classics again! Lovely weekend. I'm looking forward to some slower days for awhile, too!

  6. That sounds delicious! Eric made pea pesto once, and I loved it, but he hasn't made it again. Need to remind him! I love your book selections. I haven't read Let the Great World Spin, but Eric really loved it. Happy reading!

  11. Sounds like a perfect weekend. My husband is just impossible when it comes to second hand books - he can't go a week without liberating at least two from a charily shop or stall. The recipe sounds so delicious xx

  12. OOoo! Nice classic book selection. I was just discussing the "book clutter" at my flat. I think I will try and shave some "won't read that again"s from the shelf. Good call.

  14. What a beautiful weekend Karen. I love how you describe your book adoption, so cute.
Thanks for the recipe, I will be trying it soon. I just picked up some more spinach seed that is suppose to be heat tolerant so I am going to give them a try.
