Daffodil Daze

Don't let these photos of daffodils lead you to believe that spring has been staying around this week.  Yesterday I saw snow...yep.  That is a first for my daughter's birthday, SNOW.  Poor Frodo was shivering while we were outside, even he cannot believe this cold spring.  However, another warm up is in the forecast and I'm focusing on the flowers and the trees that are welcoming the long daylight hours by sprouting blooming and greening up my views.

We've chosen paint colors for the main level and early May will be the 'big job'.  I'm the prep gal and the cleaner upper gal.  Luckily my husband will paint as long as there is music playing, sounds like a match made in heaven.  I have high hopes that we can finish in a week, but if not that's okay.

Yesterday we drove to our daughter's town to have a celebratory birthday dinner with her.  In the fall, she and her soon to be husband will be moving to the west coast for his post doc.  I will miss her but I'm happy they have this wonderful opportunity.  Daily I repeat positive affirmations, focus on the here and now, and already have some future travel plans to visit them in the next year.

When we were first married, I moved to Texas with my husband and lived there two years far far away from my family in PA.  The internet was not invented then and neither were cell phones.  I was supposed to call my mother weekly but I called her daily and my phone bills were enormous.  So I'm thankful for technology and the connections we will have while they are far away.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

    1. are we whale watching? The snow stayed in the sky and melted as it hit the ground but it was there.

  2. I was a little shocked by snow yesterday also! We moved to FL for grad. school for my husband when we were first married; we were far away from family and didn't know anyone. I think that may have been one of the best things we ever did. There is nothing wrong with being geographically close to family and friends, but without family to lean on we learned to rely on each other and became a real family of our own. And like you said, there is technology so they won't have to write letters or have enormous phone bills!

    1. that is what happened to us as well, I'm glad for them to have the opportunity and for their adventures to begin, I just wish it was a car ride away instead of a plane ride....

  3. All 3 of my daughters live miles away from us but we make time for each other on a daily basis and plan trips for quality time with the Grandchildren. It can with a little effort work really well.

  9. First of all - you and Tracey should be whale watching - up HERE in Cape Cod so I can join you :-)
Your daffodils are pretty. Mine are just starting to see the light. I think they crawled back up this morning with the cold weather. My heat actually turned on last night. This is crazy! No snow though....

  10. we didn't get snow, but with all the rain we've gotten I'm so glad for the sunshine today!!
I finally am making my way back to checking in on my favorite bloggers, and am happy to see that you're well. having family move away (or being the family that moves) is such a big change, but the internet certainly helps with keeping in touch, especially with skype, etc.
have a wonderful and hopefully sunny weekend!

  11. My heart goes out to you, Karen! My oldest daughter was in Europe for three years while her hubby pursued his DPhil from Oxford (what a brainy guy he is...now if only he could find a job!!). Praying peace for you and so thankful for the technology that keeps our kids close despite the many miles. :)

  13. it's been cool here but not snowing! Yikes!
Painting...ewww! I don't like painting. I paid to get ours done all at once. It was better than taking forever and our home being in shambles all that time.
I am glad my daughter is still close though I don't see her often. That would be very hard!

  14. My daughter is an 18 hour car ride away from chicago to Norfolk Va. Next year she's moving within 6 hours of us in some direction! cannot wait. She calls she texts, she sends pictures. Im sure we have more contact than some who live in the next town from one another.
Waiting for warmth here too....but it is only ApRIL!

  15. Karen, you know how much I sympathize with you about your daughter's upcoming move! As I write this I am looking up on my laptop's toolbar and noticing that it is now 11:37 pm in Paris and 1:37 am in Dubai, so my two daughters who live oversea must be asleep by now. I am so grateful for Skype! It's been cold here also, we had some flurries while I was out this morning, I couldn't believe it! Have a wonderful weekend!

  16. Snow in April? Yikes! One of our daughter's lives near Chicago, so I know how you feel. But since we started our married life far from our homes and still live far away from where we grew up, I cannot complain. (I do though.) You will enjoy visiting California, I think! Sounds like you're going to be busy for a while!

  17. Say it ain't so, snow this late in April would send me over the edge... I know you are going to miss you daughter, but I hope you'll be able to visit her a lot. Like you said, even the technology we have now makes communicating so much easier. I remember when we moved here from Germany in '92 it was crazy expensive to call my family. I would set a timer and call my mom twice a month!! It was $1.50 per minute!! So much cheaper now... Have a great weekend!

  18. I am treasuring my children being young at the moment as I know that the time that they are at home or nearby is short. It is easier to stay in touch more cheaply now but it isn't quite the same..........

That cool weather has come to us now, I am not sure we will get snow but frosts for sure, after a week of glorious sunshine the rain is not particularly welcome, the daffodils will have to be our rays of sunshine!

  19. I remember the time of the most enormous phone bills, but when you are young you ten to not worry so much about money. i hope your daughter transitions well with her new move and thank God for the luxury of phones and internet .. being so connected.
Ive been away and have just glanced back over your previous posts... I am loving the aubergine/ burgundy knitting in the previous post.
PS still only have one sock complete -0 but you know how easily I get distracted and how slowly I knit. Our winter is fast rolling around the corner so I better get a snap on and finish my socks!
Cheers and stay well Karen. xx Monique

  23. Snow is April should be illegal. :-)

Isn't it amazing how much things have changed since we were our childrens' ages? I remember watching the clock carefully as I would talk to my mom on the phone, knowing each minute was costing a fortune.

  24. 'Luckily my husband will paint as long as there is music playing' I just LOVE this line, Karen! My husband is happy to do most jobs if there is music: ) I hope it will soon warm up where you are and yes, thank goodness for technology when family are not near. I hope you are having a lovely weekend xx

  25. Daffodils are little stars. They make me so happy! My sister moved away when she got married...I'm still getting used to not seeing her so often as I'd like! But technology is nice in this way, I agree. Have a lovely week!

  26. It has been a cold spring! We've had snow and frost several times this past week...even last night the temps dropped once again to almost freezing when it had been near 70 during the day. I am glad you are focusing on the positive when it comes to your daughter's move after marriage.

  27. It's funny I have been really negative about technology and cell phones this past week. (Think bad cell phone etiquette and disciplining a tween with no technology self discipline) But then my parents moved to Stuggart, Germany at the beginning of the year and we Face Timed this weekend and I was so grateful to have that conversation and then be able to shove my kid's face in front of the screen sot hey could see their grandson. They were pleased. Focus on the positive, right?
