Refocus and Regroup

My mom used to say during sometime in February that she had "the winter pissies".  I love winter and I am enjoying the cold.  However, I think of her often and how she would one day state her doneness with winter, she was quite dramatic about it. After her declaration she seemed happy and content just acknowledging her state of mind.  I work hard at holding onto positive thinking and sometimes it eludes me.  The winter is not causing this (or so I think) but there needs to be an adjustment in my thought processes.  My expectations of others and of myself.

So today I pulled out pen and paper.  Writing lists are a clear way to discern my path.  Exercise also helps and yesterday I was out walking and felt so much better after a week of crazy weather that held me indoors for too long.  How about you?  How do you regroup?  How do you refocus?  I'm curious.

Our son is visiting for the second half of his first spring break (he has two of them).  Unfortunately, his train on Amtrak was delayed by two hours due to signal problems at the south station in Boston.  I was reading the news online and it appeared both the morning and evening commute were disrupted.  But he's home now, phew! We have plans for lunch out and some shopping.

Have a great weekend!

  1. Exercise definitely helps me - never would have thought that several years ago. ;-) Like yesterday, I got home from work completely frazzled, so I laced up my running shoes and went for a run. Felt a million times better after. Glad your son made it home, enjoy your time together.

  2. Enjoy your family time! Exercise is the best way for me to refocus as well. Walking with my dog, pilates or yoga for half an hour or if I really want to clear my head I hit the gym and do some serious workout with weights. I always feel so refreshed after it! Enjoy your weekend!

  3. Exercise- especially walking, outside if possible, helps me a lot. Have a great weekend with your son. My daughter and grand daughter are flying in for a short visit today. The rest of her family will come tomorrow in the car. Always fun when the grown-up children come home. Have a good weekend.

  6. Lists, exercise, reading, and knitting - my attitude adjusters are pretty much the same as yours. That lovely cake might also help me adjust my attitude! I hope you and your son have a wonderful visit.

  8. I am a list maker as well - and this always helps to keep me focused. I often get overwhelmed with life as my job tends to take over. But I have found it is because I let it take over. I have worked really hard for the past 6 months to not let that happen. And part of this focus has been to make time for me - which includes twice weekly workout sessions with a trainer. Who knew throwing weights around would help me keep a positive attitude? I think it is because it has helped me be more confident. Enjoy your time with your son!

  10. Being cooped up any time of year makes positive thinking hard. I need the out of doors, just a walk around the block, if nothing else, to keep my mind free of the doldrums. Frodo is so, so cute. We're seriously thinking we need a dog again.

  12. I find that quiet time with mixed with a good cup of hot tea and soft music helps me regroup and refocus. Spinning also helps me ... as I spin the movement of fiber onto my bobbin makes me slow down and ponder things that are going on in my life. Enjoy your family time !

  13. Knitting or any type of creating are the ways I regroup.
Is that a plate of frosting? I can't think of anything better.

  14. I understand what you mean. Since the time to knit is precious, I'll go with that and definitely exercise. The other evening it was throwing our collective hands in the air deciding to not cook and walking to a local restaurant and just having a glass of wine and a light snack, just the 2 of us.

  15. Exercise, knitting, and reading can help recenter me. I especially need the exercise. I don't mind being indoors because I'm expert at sloth.

  16. A hot bath with a good book, a cup of tea/ coffee and a few quiet minutes or any other configuration of things that I like paired with the act of doing it alone are what help bring me back up. I also find, like you that making a list is very helpful - esp listing my many reasons to be grateful :-) Happy weekend, enjoy your time with your son!

  17. ˆI've never heard of the winter pissies ! I Love that. May be able to get out tomorrow for a decent walk. Was freezing in minnesota! Now its suddenly springlike in Chicago but i t won't last! Back to cold for another few months IM afraid. My sister and I in Minnesota recalled many good traits of our mini schnauzer missy that grew up with us!

  18. Time in nature, journaling, a long soak in the tub, time spent playing with my little man....all help me refocus and regroup.

Enjoy the time with your son Karen. Have a beautiful weekend.

  19. I have to give myself a little talking to sometimes and fresh air usually does the trick too. I love the story about your mum. I am done with Winter now, I have to admit. Have a lovely weekend with your son, dear Karen xx

  21. Oh, the winter pissies and I are old friends! : ) Like you, I journal and make gratitude lists and look to the outdoors for lifting my spirits. It is warmer here today than it has been in a long while and a walk is on my schedule this Saturday. Have a wonderful time with your son, Karen! xx

  22. I regroup much like you do, I make a list. I try to list and do the things I have been putting off or avoiding. Once those are done, then I somehow feel the weight lifted. Then I take a deep breath and just enjoy the peace.
Enjoy your time with your son and please send me a slice of that cake...thanks. :)

  24. i tend to be a real loner....and find that if I force myself into the company of others, life really does brighten!!! (and they don't even have to be knitters, although, of course, that helps!!!!) a brisk walk around the block, too; there is something to that seasonal disorder thing!!!!

  25. The way I break away from winter is to leave town and take a drive in the country. Even better if I can stop and get out, listen to birds, feel the wind, smell the air, or examine grass or trees. Nature restores me and in the winter, most of it is brown, gray... yuck. Thanks for the photo of Frodo.
