New Planner and New Goals

Supposedly the heat wave is over today, I will not believe it until I feel and witness it.  Call me Doubting Thomas!  My week has been overall a good one.  I've been reflecting most of the time of how I spend my time.  I want to be more purposeful in my days.

I love when August rolls around because it's a new school year showing up.  I am married to a professor so our years start in the fall in a way.  My daily planner does as well.  Later today, I'll be transferring dates and important events into my new one.

I remember my first day of high school and how I'd plan out my school days, making a color coded schedule, that is how I feel this week!  A new school year and I'm not a student, so no pressure studying for tests.  I love back to school themed store sales, insisting every one needs a new notebook, pencils, pens, and highlighters.

After knitting one pair of socks and having a second pair currently on the needles, I recovered from my "too many shawls" feeling.  I gleefully wound up some hedgehog fiber twisted sock yarn yesterday, I'm planning to knit another shawl.  Why not?

I've successfully completed yoga five days a week at the start of the day for more than a month.  The walking has been hit and miss due to the weather.  I can't walk in super hot humid weather because of my arthritis.  It makes me feel awful.

You can guess that food will be in my goal setting, it always is.  I want to create new meals and revisit some old ones that I once loved.  Out of all of my goals and intentions, this food goal is the first one I quit.  That has got to change :)

Time marches by quickly and I don't want to waste a single minute!

  1. I have been putting dates in my new planner too - always fun to have a fresh, new planner - so many possibilities. Good job with your walking, yoga and eating goals. I have been trying to walk as much as I can here in Philly, but I really need to get back on track when I get home. It will still be super hot in AZ, so I am planning to do some swimming every day. Have a great weekend!

  2. I'm retired & live in a college town, so I always like making plans for the beginning of the school year. Besides, Autumn is my favorite time of year and I want to enjoy every bit of it. I have fibromyalgia and can't walk or work in the garden when it is hot & humid for the same reason as you, I feel awful, and it will often bring on a flare up of symptoms. The cold doesn't bother me, in fact I get more daily walks in the winter than in the summer!

  3. September has always seemed to me like it should be the start of the new year. I've just changed my planning system from a mess of Post-Its all over my counter, to using a Leuchtturm notebook and the bullet system. Hopefully I can stick with it. And in the food department I just bought an Instant Pot and am having fun experimenting with it. Sometimes a change in cooking routine gives me new enthusiasm for food prep.

  4. With being Jewish and a teacher, my years always start in the fall.
I just noticed that Kristieinbc is using a Leuchtturm notebook and the bullet system -- so am I! Are you familiar with it. I'm hoping it will help me live more mindfully!

  5. I use a notebook for notes and I hand draw a calendar, which helps me keep track of days. However, I'm not very proficient at lists or keep track of things I should. Not sure this old dog can learn new tricks!

  6. I am trying to hit some exercise goals myself, but a hip issue that has plagued me for 30 years is throwing a wrench in the plans! Waiting to discuss the results of a MRI with the Dr and hoping it can be resolved. The food part, I am now learning how to cook for just 2 instead of 4 or 3. Last chick off to college in August, maybe it's time to invest in a cooking for two book?

  7. After seeing the Back to School display at Walgreens my heart sank. Then I laughed at myself. Im not going back to school! Zach is teaching but in a whole different fun arena. Al and Fireman and I are not in school.
I can say I've maintained my weight loss so far. It is very hard. Even going off the basics of WW means a tiny gain that I have to re lose . My go to stuff is: Low fat mozzarella sticks for protein,
wassa crackers for crunch, raw carrots and a touch of any dip, Vita top muffin tops, and basically no bread no pasta no rice no baked goods. Ick!!

    1. It is hard to maintain. I think the key is never going back to regular junk eating....but junk food tastes good at some point but it's not healthy or helpful in any way.

  8. You and I are so alike in that I somehow still feel September is the start of my year. It must be from all the years I was a teacher! 😊 I love the goals you have been setting for yourself!

  9. Bertie our eldest Grandson starts school in September, I just wonder where the time went. I was the manager of a Nursery for many years so my years also tend to work around the school calendar.

  10. Looks like you've made amazing progress on the newest shawl in such a short time; your needles must fly. You're right about the days flying by and that it's good to have goals. I need that!

  11. No heat break for us in South Carolina (yet)-- my Fall will start in August also as I work at a preschool and the new year is coming soon. I can hardly wait for Fall and cooler weather - a good motivation for winter knitting!

  12. This is the first year that I"ve used a mid year calendar and I'm actually really liking the day to day ness of it!

  14. Oh! I LOVE a new planner and back to school shopping (for notebooks & pens, not clothes) rates up there with yarn shopping. There's just so much potential in a new notebook, even a cheap 10 cents spiral one. I have to be super careful about planning & goal setting though. Writing it down tends to bring out the immature 12 year old in me that has a bad "You can't make me!" attitude.

  15. I just got a new planner for work! It's been nice to fill in and keep track of what is being taken care of each day. I'm two years post school and it still feels like a new year starts in August. It has been a rather slow adjustment. --Sierra

  16. I believe that is called The September Syndrome, when you feel that a new year starts then and you plan and you want to start something new and you set new goals etc. I suffer from that too!

  17. A couple months ago I started working with a MidoriTN....and love it. Love that there are as many 'sections' as I need in addition to the calendar part and that I can adjust the notebook when we travel. And I so understand the 'start of school' euphoria!!! (I'm sort of experiencing it, too.....my 'class' starts in a couple weeks, and I'm giddy excited about it!)

  18. It's so good to set goals, Karen and well done with the yoga. I really need to get into some kind of fitness regime and eating rubbish NEEDS to stop. I am going to start on Monday, no sweet treats {well, maybe just weekends} and lots of fruit and veggies. Happy Sunday and wishing you a great week ahead! xx

    1. I buy a small hardback pocket one from barnes and nobles. I switch between pocket and 5x7 size every year because I like one while I have the other. I use moleskines for notebooks.

You must try hedgehog fibers (twist sock) the twist is super twisty.

  20. Karen, thank you for your sweet email ^__^. I saw a neighbor walking his Scottish terrier; what a jaunty little walk he has. I love that blanket you have on your couch. Is that feather and fan? What yarn did you use?

    1. That yarn is pre ravelry days, I think it is paton's paradise? it was a cotton boucle-ish kind of rustic cotton I think in DK weight.
