Weekends

How was your weekend?

Mine was nice, we stayed home and relaxed mostly.  I made potato salad and every time I eat it, I remember my childhood - Easters and picnics - with family.  It's a nice memory.  My one Aunt made the best potato salad and everyone who followed her recipe couldn't recreate hers.

I just follow good old Betty Crocker and omit the onions and double the celery.

My husband wasn't feeling the greatest so I forced him to not do anything yesterday.  If he isn't trying to get everything done before retirement (two weeks!) he is doing a myriad of chores around the house.  He started power-washing the cement around the pool and gosh that is noisy!

In the mornings I hear an owl and it's delightful.  Sometimes at night I can hear him/her but definitely at 5:30 a.m.  Also the tree frogs are getting louder each evening.  I love their sound too.

Well folks, like Icarus I flew too close to the sun.  I boldly have been knitting my gradient shawl while reading without any problems.  Yesterday I was zooming with my IRL knitting friends and I dropped three stitches and it RAN.  I spent almost an hour trying to work the stitches back up without luck.  So I had to unknit five rows.

I am pretty sure I have close to 700 stitches because each row is taking 45 minutes or so.  Also unknitting is so tediously long (one hour per row).  I'm happy to report that I have fixed the problem and have learned a lesson.  I'm back to just knitting and listening to podcasts and tv.

And if you're wondering if I do life lines?  No, I do not.  These humbling knitting exercises happen rarely.  Because I believe I am invincible!  Ha ha ha.

How was your weekend?

  1. Oh dear. That unraveling sounds daunting. My husband gave me a hammock for our anniversary so that was where I spent most of my weekend. The weather was cooler and I had a new book and it was lovely.

  2. You're like a daring teenager with your knitting without lifelines! You must be very patient to unknit for five hours but it sounds like you have learned your lesson. Knit on invincibly!

  3. WOW! That's a lot of unraveling. Sorry about that. 700 stitches is a lot for one row. I probably would've cried...or at least thrown a tantrum - lol. Fletch and I were just commenting that we have not been hearing owls recently. I normally hear them in the winter months, but sometimes in summer too. I miss their calls.

  4. Listening to owls and tree frogs would be quite soothing. Your hubby knows he will have more time in two weeks to do all his "honey do's". No need to complete them all before retirement. Thinking back 5 rows of lace is quite a journey. I do not use lifelines either. When doing lace work I probably should. But I am stubborn and don't want to take the time to add one. Yes, I have regretted that decision on numerous occasions. LOL. My weekend was fantastic with lots of time to knit and just be still.

  5. ...sounds like a lovely weekend to me...minus the knitting snafu...frogging is the worst...I used to have my Mom un-knit things for me because I couldn't stand to do it myself...
    ~Have a lovely day!

  6. I've tried lifelines, and they don't work for me. I get all tangled up between the lifeline and the lace. I hate frogging that much knitting!

I love your Icarus allusion, though!

  9. I love the way certain foods trigger memories. Your weekend sounds lovely except for the unraveling. Ouch! That is a lot of tedious unknitting. Your shawl is going to be so pretty. I'd love to hear an owl near our house but that doesn't happen. The cicadas started their chorus this weekend though so we are into late summer.

  10. I dont do life lines either. I just find they bunch up and don't save me from tears anyhow. Sometimes the only way I can do this is to just do a row or two of lace each night. I could never chat with anyone while doing lace ! Wow. I've never liked potato salad. Im weird. My husband loves it.

  12. Unraveling.. I may have just quit!
We can hear the cicada's and they creep me out.. I am a bad sleeper and sometimes when I can't fall asleep all I can hear is the cicadas.
Hope your husband is feeling better. Yay retirement.

  13. Oh boy that is a lot of stitches to unknit. That is what always makes me so wary of lace knitting, what to do if you make a mistake! I am glad to hear that you have it all sorted now.

  14. everything growing in your yard looks beautiful! (and another one here who doesn't do lifelines. it's maybe the riskiest thing I do ;-)

  15. OH, ouch! I feel the pain of having to fog five rows. Yeah, I don't do lifelines either.
