Knitting Round Up

I can't remember if I mentioned that this is my sixth Citron shawl, sometimes what I say here and what I say on Instagram gets a bit blurry.  Anyways, number SIX.  And yes, I could knit another and another and another.  I love the pattern and the way it wears around my neck.  I do have one more citron planned for a holiday gift for this year, but I'm not casting on just yet.

The gradient yarn was a gift from my sister when she went on a vacation out West.  I added from my leftover stash more off-white and purple wool to add one more wedge.  Hopefully tonight I'll be finished with casting off.

I started the Asana Shawl a while ago in late November.  Making holiday knits overtook my precious knitting time and I shelved this pretty project.  This past week I've been blissfully knitting every day making this lace weight shawl bigger.

As you saw on Wednesday, I started a pair of socks for me.  I'm starting to see the striping in the yarn and can't wait to get to the stockinette knitting so it will stand out.  My standard sock recipe is on size 2 needles and a cast on of 64 stitches.  I like roomy socks.

Now to my not-so-good knitting news...  I frogged, yes ripped out an entire shawl last weekend.  I blissfully started a bottom up shawl using yarn that I thought would definitely fit the design.  Sadly, because I didn't swatch enough and I tend to knit on the snug side, my shawl measured 42 inches on the wing span instead of the 48 inches that was the target size.

Since the shawl is a bottom up design there is no way to add to the shawl to increase the size.  I frequently do this with top down shawls.  I add length and get creative to use up all the wool or to make the shawl bigger.

I put the shawl in "time out" and then when most of my emotions had settled down, I ripped it out to reuse the yarn.  I have no plans at this time to cast on the same shawl pattern again.  I'm still thinking about it.

I'm still contemplating some mitts for me but that's another blog post when I decide to cast on.

Have a lovely weekend!

  1. I am just amazed by 6 Citrons. I made one and it took forever! I love the look of the shawl, but that rusching takes an awful lot of stitches!

  2. That Citron shawl is absolutely beautiful, Karen! Oh my! It will look amazing on you with your beautiful dark brown hair!

I also like the pattern for the socks...looking forward to seeing the finished product!

I'm so sorry about the shawl that you had to frog. It has to be frustrating to have put energy into it and then find out it isn't meeting the required size. Or at least it is frustrating to me when that happens with a crochet project I am working on.

  3. A truly lovely purple round up! This Citron is really beautiful and hopefully it will be warming your neck soon. I have to ask - what is that filigree object with your Asana shawl? I've imagined it as a book, purse, needle case, but can't tell for sure. Whatever it is, it's beautiful!

  8. The purples in the Citron and the burgundy for the new shawl are just lovely yarns.

Sad about the frogging, but if it wasn't going to be the right size, you would never be happy with it and knitting should make you HAPPY!

  9. Such pretty purples. The socks look like they will be toasty. Sorry about the frogging. I find once I've made the decision, the frogging is a relief. I always say, just getting my money's worth out of the yarn by using it for another project.

  11. LOVE all your current projects, Karen!! I have never knit a bottom-up shawl that I've truly loved. I really just need to say "no" to the occasional temptation. ;) I'm an adder-to-make-bigger soul, too. Getting close on your Citron! Looking forward to seeing it in its finished glory! blessings ~ tanna

  13. Lovely round up! I am going to unknit my shawl this morning. I was thinking about casting on just enough to try out the chart and get more comfortable with chart reading before I recast the whole shawl. That would give me a good gauge idea too.

  14. All your projects are beautiful, but that sock yarn.... I need that yarn! I absolutely love the colorway & can't wait to see how it looks in stockinette.

  15. Great progress this week, Karen, and it's great how you kept it real with that one shawl that had to be frogged. I've been havin' issues with gauge too sock wise.
