Orchids at the Conservatory

This past Saturday I went to the Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh with my family.  Both my sister and I carried around our "big" cameras and had lots of fun taking photos.  I'm thoroughly enjoying my new lens.

I was thrilled to see many other photographers toting their cameras and yes, I did peek at what camera they owned and their lenses.  I might have lens envy and some ideas for future Christmas presents.

We had a fantastic time and went through the Orchid room twice!  My favorite though was the bonsai displays.  I would guess that working in a conservatory would be quite relaxing.  The atmosphere is gentle and soothing.  I love the water features and the sound of trickling, oh - they also played the cricket chirping through the speaker system.

My sister bought two little orchids in the gift store because she is fantastic at keeping them alive and blooming!  Not me...my talents are in wool.  I'm okay with that.

Since January is in the middle of winter days which can be bleak at times, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the orchids and their pops of color.

I hope you enjoyed the flower show.

  1. I so enjoyed your flower show! My sister-in-law, her husband, and I went to the orchid show at Longwood Gardens last winter, and it was so beautiful (and warm!) that it definitely helped me get through the rest of the winter. Thank you for sharing!

  4. Yes I did, it was a beautiful tour. The colours are stunning. Thank you for your concern about Gerard, he is doing a little at a time or we chat whilst I do the packing reminiscing about each article. To take or not to take...we are not doing very well with the getting rid. Take care.

  5. I liked the Bonsai too! I have an orchid my husband gave me a year ago this past Christmas. I decided I wasn't going to baby it--'do or die'. Well, it made it through the year (despite me setting it outside in 90 degree heat) and I am excited to report that it is blooming again! You have the 'wool' talent and I enjoy that.

  6. I find orchids fascinating and also a little creepy looking. They look almost a bit prehistoric to me, I totally understand the lens envy! -Sierra

  7. Beautiful orchids. I love going through conservatories in the winter when everything else is so grey and bleak.

I have the perfect handle for that faucet in the first photo. The handle is bright red! LOL

  11. Beautiful shots, Karen, I am loving my 50mm lens as well. I think it's so funny that we both received one for Christmas. : ) I am terrible at getting orchids to bloom. A friend gave me one awhile ago and I inwardly cringed knowing that as soon as it's blossom faded it would probably never have another! Imagine my surprise when I noticed a possible stalk growing the other day! It is in the weirdest corner of my house, very indirect light and I never dreamed it would actually like it there. I'm excited to see it bloom!
