Sliver of Reality

Good morning to you all, how are you?  I'm in the kitchen at the table with my computer and the rain has stopped for now.  Yesterday, the rain arrived shortly after lunch and kept on going.  My walking goals have been set aside because of my 'valid' excuses, it's raining or it's too muggy.  Frodo, my faithful walking buddy doesn't like hot or muggy weather either.

I've been thinking about motivation  and inspiration towards writing and blogging consistently since Grace mentioned this in a comment on the last post.  First and foremost, I am a talker.  I talk all the time and if there is no one to listen to me, I talk to myself.

Luckily I have Frodo, so my non-stop chatting has ears to capture my string of words.

My inspirations ebb and flow like many of you.  I have times when I wonder what will I write about.  Magically, when I sit at the computer and upload my photos I find the words, I find a thought to expand on or I write about what is on my mind.

Writing for myself is the key.  I'm not out to write what I think other people want to read.  I'm not out to capture massive readerships (I do like knowing my blog is read).  I'm writing for me, I'm writing what I'd like to read if I was reading my blog.  Funnily. I never re-read my posts often.  Like my journals, I write and document and file away.

I write about what I value:  my family, knitting, reading, enjoying life in the simplest of ways and capturing contentment and happiness easily through my camera lens. I write, write and write.  The more you write the more the writing is there.

When I was attending university, I'd take walks in the town before the winter break as the sun was setting.  I'd walk passed house after house looking in their windows.  If I was lucky, I could see a tableau of a family or couple or maybe an empty room.  I'd quickly spy their decorations or room arrangements.  I'd daydream about what their life was like, were they happy, did they like their jobs etc....

Reading personal blogs is for me peeking into a window.  I've seen some beautiful rooms, some lovely lives being lead.  I've read about hardships and health challenges.  Just like a peek into a window, we see only a sliver of what is reality.  Isn't that beautiful?  I can still imagine and daydream!

As you read this post, you're reading my sliver of reality :)

In other news, my wrist is mostly doing great.  My yoga routine is going strong and eating a salad daily is still a hurdle.  I'm not sure why.  My husband is fully recovered from the wasp attack.

two more sides and this is DONE

I hope you have a fantastic weekend!

  1. This is a lovely post - and I agree with you about writing for yourself, but also enjoying a window into others' lives.

I *love* to walk around right around dusk and look into people's windows. I take it rather personally when they have closed their curtains, to be honest! Of course, I'm sure if people were looking into my house, it would be different ... ;-)

Enjoy the weekend. Please give Frodo a kiss from me.

  2. I feel that way about blogging too, sometimes I don't fully know what I will talk about but once I sit at my laptop and start typing the ideas come to me. I totally agree with you that reading blogs is like looking into other people's lives and seeing what other people are doing. I am so interested in people and their lives but sometimes in real life we don't even see into people's actual lives we just scratch the surface, which is why I love reading blogs so much.

  3. Wasp attack? Oh my...

My life is overflowing with busyness of all sorts, and I long for slow days to sit and post on my blog (woefully neglected for months now).

Wishing you and Frodo a happy Friday! xo Lisa

  4. I can't believe your blanket is nearly done! But all those ends to weave in just hurts my soul! I might finish the knitting, but that blanket would have ends left until time immemorial!

  5. I had never really thought about it that way, but reading blogs (and blogging) is like sharing slivers of our lives and realities. Sharing can be a powerful thing, whether it's so we remember incidents, learn that we're not alone, or get and give support. Thanks for letting us peek into your window (and see that great blanket and all its ends)!

  6. Trying to eat healthy is hard.... Maybe you could count a fruit salad or mix things up with salads without lettuce... Lettuce is not my favorite vegetable so that would be challenging for me!

  7. Keep keepin' it real, Karen. I like how you write for yourself. That's what I do too. I LOVE Frodo. Are Schnauzers more mellow than Wire Foxes? I follow some Wire Foxes on IG; they're so cute and I laugh when I see videos of their little tags going top speed.

  8. Such a good post! I write to share, I think. I do other writing for myself. I rarely reread posts, but sometimes it helps to have a record of various things. I love the "web" of community that develops among people whose paths otherwise probably would not cross. And I miss people who stop blogging!

  9. Thank you so much for mentioning me today, Karen! : ) This post inspired me and gave me the boost I needed to get blogging again. You are right; just write about what interests you and everything else falls into place. Wise words! I LOVE the shots of Frodo, he is so photogenic, and I love how the never-ending blanket is turning out. Have a lovely weekend! xo

  11. I enjoy your posts whatever you write about or why, and as long as you enjoy them that is all that matters isn't it. I would talk to Frodo - or my own version of a Frodo - if I had a faithful companion like that too!

  12. Is you blanket the 10-stitch blanket?

The way that you look in house windows, I wonder about the people driving along beside me. I make up all kinds of stories about who they are, what they do and where they are going. It sure does help pass the time on the road.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

  13. I loved this post!
AND, I absolutely love Frodo. He is absolutely precious.
    Have a wonderful weekend.

  14. I chat a lot too, mainly to the dog but Gerard is a good companion too. I love to see a 'little' of how people live and different places around the world that I will never visit. Love the blanket, but I am not at all envious of sewing in all those ends. Have a great weekend.

  15. Yes, I agree. I write for myself. Writing is as much about what is left out as what is put into a piece. Sometimes just for fun, I write something and then write something else about what I left out. It is an interesting exercise. Like Caffeine Girl, I am intrigued by the web of community that develops among bloggers. P. S. I think rain or muggy weather is a valid excuse for staying indoors. I walk early in the morning to avoid the heat and rarely walk in the rain. I love the rain from the indoors. Have a good weekend.

  16. I so enjoy the peek into your reality. I've often thought it was like looking into the windows of houses. It's nice to see the similarities and differences we all have. Hope you have a good weekend.

  17. Your thoughts are so similar to mine in terms of blogging. That was fun to read. I also enjoy the peek into blogger friends days. Knit/crochet blog pals are a group of wise ones who are not afraid to admit their short comings. They are an encouraging bunch. I would feel a bit lonely without you all

  18. The blanket will be wonderful for snuggly under! Your post is very thought provoking, great insight.

  19. Sharing slivers of reality (and peeking into others) is a lovely way to describe why we blog! Frodo always makes me smile, but whoa, that blanket is AMAZING! Hope you're having a wonderful weekend!

  20. It never stops amazing me when someone stops me in town and comments on Freddy....and 'his' blog....somehow, it's stopped being mine for many people. And there's always a quick moment when I wonder...how did they KNOW that? Like you, I write for fun....and forget that people sometimes read it....for fun. Glad to hear that the wrist is doing better and hubby has recovered....would you mind sending us a bit of your rain? You can keep the muggy part----we have enough of our own. And that blanket!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, Karen!!!! Love it!!!! Happy weekending!

  21. Love your 10 stitch blanket! I'm also so glad I stumbled across your blog however long ago it was. Somehow, reading about the calm, happy everydayness of your life helps calm me & helps me feel centered. While I enjoy reading others' blogs about their constant travel & adventures, I have nothing in common with those folks. But with you, I feel like we're soul sisters. Except that you're walking & eating salad every day & I'm over here, laying on the sofa eating chips... But we do share the love of knitting... :)

  22. I have many of the same feelings regarding personal blogs, that was so well-said! Your projects are stunning, I love the blanket and can't wait to see the finish!
