Knitting News

I started a new project intending to turn a square into a rectangle using the same amount of yarn.  I quickly did the math then proceeded to knit.  My math was wrong (!).  We were watching TV and I tried four separate times to do mental math to correct the spacing of the design while knitting at the same time.

This is what I've learned:

- I cannot do mental math
-I should not do mental math especially at night
-I should not believe myself and feel confident of any redesigning issues after dinner time.

I retired to bed thinking about my math problem and then in the morning, I solved the problem quickly with pen and paper and calculator.  Well well well.  I figured out the spacing in less than 2 minutes.

My sister's cardigan is coming along splendidly.  I am on the ribbing, and all too soon I'll be knitting a sleeve - so excited and giddy!

What are knitting or crafting these days?

  1. I have begun clue 4 on the Lunar Phases MKAL... and the genius of the designer always amazes me. I am with you on maths after dinner... a very bad idea!

  2. I'm still working on my Match & Move, and I seem to be having some of the same issues with night time knitting. There isn't any math involved and the pattern is quite simple, but this is the second time I've made a mistake and had to rip out. I do 95% of my knitting at night when I'm tired, so I may have to re-think that (or maybe just pay attention)!

  3. Your sister's cardigan is lovely; I always admire your color choices. When it comes to math, pencil and paper definitely helps me. Sometime I have to actually sketch things out visually to SEE how the math works. And, yes, my brain works much better in the morning when it comes to that kind of thing. I'm just finishing up a baby sweater and bootees. Happy knitting! ♥

  5. Sometimes we over think it and with time away from the issue we can find the solution! Love the sweater progress.

  6. Oh, I'm horrible at mental math too! You should see me try to do a problem in my head. I'm all pencil and paper, old school. The cardigan is coming along great. How exciting you're almost done. I haven't knitted for a few days now I think, since the weekend. I will try to get some in today.

    1. And yes, this header was more work than the last blog's. But I'm glad I got it right to my liking and was grateful the program was free online to use.

  8. Ah yes, that evening Math without paper and pencil gets me every time. Actually it doesn't even have to be evening. My excuse is that I am a visual learner. I am glad you figured out how to modify the pattern. Both projects look lovely. Enjoy your knitting.

  9. I have never been good at mental math. I need scratch paper for math. My students, though, try to do everything on a calculator. The problem with that is they can't find their errors. I'm trying to get them to go old school.

  10. I was smiling at your mental arithmatic issues. I did something similar when trying to order fabric using imperial measurements from metric.

  11. Ha, my knitting math is alway off, no matter how hard I try. That's why I tend to go for trial and error or totally winging it. That's also is why I stick to simple designs... ;-)

  12. LOL! I may have experienced that issue with the mental math at the end of the day. Rarely does any good come from that. Ha! Loving your projects, Karen. You are a whiz! Looking forward to watching these progress! blessings ~ tanna

  14. My mental math sucks too. Like, REALLY sucks. I love the simple yarn color. Simple is better, in my book.

  15. Sleep is always a good way to deal with maths problems, never do maths while tired and watching Tv not a good combination, glad you sorted it quickly the next day.
