Knitting News

This is the last gift present of the year!

I finished the star shower cowl last week or so.  This cowl is oh so soft with the alpaca yarn that I used.  If you haven't made this cowl yet you might want to consider adding the pattern to your queue.  The cowl starts off like a shawl knitting back and forth.  Later it is joined together and knit in the round.

I had fun with this unusual construction and following along with the directions.  I'd recommend this pattern for an intermediate knitter.

If you are a super adventurous beginner, give it a try as well.  I never followed the levels when I was starting out knitting.  If you ask me, if there is interest then you will figure it out eventually.

Ravelry notes are here

Now for a quick question!  Yesterday we went to an optometry appointment for my husband, as we walked into the medical facility I spied a KNITTER knitting on a bench in full sun in 38 degree weather.

I don't think I could knit in 38 degree weather without freezing to death but I was wondering, would you?  Could you?

Comments

  1. That Star Shower cowl is lovely, especially in alpaca. Someone on your gift list is very lucky!

I think I could knit outside in 38 degree weather without freezing to death, especially if I was sitting in the sunshine. My fingers might get too cold and stiff to knit well, so add a nice pair of alpaca fingerless gloves and I would probably be fine. Maybe I'll give it a try some day and let you know!

  2. I agree with Bonny. If I had fingerless mitts and a sunbeam, I would make it work, particularly if it I were on deadline or wanted to be left alone.

  3. I don't think I could knit in 38 degree weather! My hands would just become useless because of the cold. : ) I love the color of this cowl, Karen, and will definitely add it to my cue for the day when I feel brave enough to move beyond beginner knitting, LOL!

  4. Well, your cowl is similar to the Ones I have been knitting! Yours is just lovely.
IF I was dressed warmly. in the sunshine with NO WIND, I could do it.

  5. Love this cowl, especially the cowl. Nope, no knitting outside in that cold for me; here it'd probably be raining, too. This is our dark time of year....sunrise today at 7:48 and sunset at 4:17! (Actually, we didn't see the sun as it rained all day long, but it did get dark right on schedule.)

  6. I think I could!!! The cold doesn't bother me too much unless it is WINDY! I've only worn my coat one time so far this year. A sweater and turtleneck seem to be enough most days.

Your cowl is BEAUTIFUL! I know whoever gets it will be a very lucky person.

  7. Aren't those cowls fun! the construction is quite clever and the resulting shape is really wearable. I think I'm with the first few commenters - with a pair of fingerless gloves and some sunshine, I'm sure I'd be knitting!

  8. Your cowl is lovely! I might sit in the sun and knit - even in 38 degree weather! The sun, after all!

  9. I would knit in 38 degree weather in the sun if I had on a pair of fingerless mitts and it actually sounds nice after so many gray days. Your cowl is lovely and I hope it keeps you warm this winter!

  10. I would like to knit in the sun, but unfortunately, I don't go in the sun any more. BUT...if I did, I doubt that 38 would work for me - even with fingerless mitts, my fingers wold be forzen! Your cowl is gorgeous. What a beautiful shade of blue. Someone is going to feel very loved!

  11. Love your cowl! I knit that pattern a while back and naturally didn't check my gauge... so it turned out to be more of a turtle neck. But I still wear it often. I've got several skeins set aside with plans to knit a few more. Perhaps I'll accidentally stumble onto the correct gauge one day. :) As for outdoor knitting - I LOVE the idea of it but the reality.... my fingers would probably get too cold and stiff to manage the needles.

  12. The cowl is very pretty. It really shows off the yarn. I think knitting in the sun at 38 degrees might be just a smidge cold for me. Now if I could figure out how to walk and knit at the same time I might be warm enough to knit. I walk until the temps or wind chill gets down to about 10 degrees but I bundle up in layers - everywhere.

  13. No way! I am always cold and maybe the sun would help, but it would not be enough. The cowl looks cozy and warm, plus the color is so rich. Nicely done!

  14. Love the cowl! It has a similar construction to the Dewberry.
I could not knit in 38-degree weather -- not even with fingerless mitts!

  15. Wow, you go on having knit all that lace. I like the shape of the cowl as I don't like cowls that hang away from my neck unless it's a summer one.
