Embracing the Lull

I've been embracing the lull that happens this time of year.  Winter is still here and the weather continues to be chilly, windy, cloudy and snowy.  Yet each day I witness a promise of the next season.  Have you noticed how light the days are becoming?  I open the blinds earlier each day.  Yesterday I did the dinner dishes with natural daylight.  These tiny events make February a great month.

Holly and Frodo seem to be in a lull as well.  Our evenings are 'mostly' quiet and everyone's behavior is exactly as we predict it should be.  Frodo continues to run down the hallway around six pm and give a specific bark to her.  I think he's asking her to come out and play (which means he wants to chase her).  She of course completely ignores him, for now.

Our furniture arrived!  My body doesn't know what to think about it.  I'm sore in different places but so far it's a good sore and nothing terrible is developing.  Every morning I walk into the family room and admire the newness.  The pets don't know what to think about the furniture.  Frodo refuses to sleep on it like the old sofa.  Pesky Holly wants to scratch the chair.  Luckily she is easily diverted with a fetching game of mousey.  Sometimes she acts like a dog when she fetches and retrieves.

I've been focusing on gratitudes and swatting away stray thoughts that would rob me of serenity.  As you know that is a work in progress for me.  I write out each day and imagine what I would like to do and accomplish.  Having a plan makes for stress free afternoons.

I'm behind listening to all of my audio podcasts.  Yesterday while knitting and catching up on podcasts, I listened to the knitmore girls podcast and Jasmine discussed how she was being intentional.  I've been contemplating her ideas and thought about myself and my own intentional living.   I can intentionally choose to be worried or I can choose to not be worried.  I can choose focusing on a stress or not.

I know this:  focusing on my creative pursuits gives me the building blocks to setting an intention that makes my life better.

My grandmother (mom's mom) was quite cheerful and happy not matter what life threw at her.  She had a complicated childhood and worked hard to be a mother while working full time.  She chose happiness and it showed.  I have fond memories of her always laughing and embracing the very best in life.

My other grandmother (dad's mom) was also cheerful and happy.  She laughed about everything and anything too.  She had six children then went on to be a foster mother to an additional 36 babies.  What an open heart to have!

I wonder if either grandmother sat and thought about choosing intentions?

  1. Your new furniture looks great! I think we chose the same set for MD, just a different pattern for the chair. I'm glad you wrote about the lull. I've been complaining about winter lasting too long and spring being too slow to arrive instead of accepting and living in the lull. Spring has never not arrived in its own good time, and there is much to be gained in this late winter season.

  2. I love your new furniture! It’s wonderful, it looks very comfortable. I would like a new set but don’t dare suggest it with Bo in the house! ☺️ Maybe once he is fully trained!

  3. February is still winter, at least in Utah. I think (fingers crossed) that I saw snowdrop leaves coming through the snow yesterday morning. I'm going to look today and see if it was just an illusion. I have reveled in the early light and late light and that extra light has made it easier for me to choose happiness. Your new furniture is beautiful.

  6. Ah, the lull. Still time to be cozy and quiet. It's good to be reminded of that. The light is definitely stronger - both morning and late afternoon and I am enjoying that. Love your new chair - gorgeous. Is the sofa the same pattern? I have a tax appt with our accountant tomorrow mid-day but other than that, I'm wishing for a peaceful weekend. Hope you have a great one!

  7. I like the new chair!

I've found that certain browsers work better with blogger comments than others. Folks might want to try switching that up if they continue to experience problems.

  8. I always come away from reading here with a smile on my face. You have such a gracious way of expressing your thoughts about worry...about life in general. I enjoyed hearing about your grandmothers. It would be interesting to know whether or not they stopped and thought about living life intentionally or if they just did it because it was part of their character make-up. I do find that living intentionally does help me focus more on the positive. Great post...oh, and your new living room furniture is beautiful...so light and cheerful! I love it!

  9. I couldn't agree more that focusing on creative pursuits makes life better. I enjoyed hearing about your grandmothers. As you do, I treasure the memories I have of mine. They were both makers and creative out of necessity. They raised families during the Depression. Such a thoughtful post. Thank you.

  11. Yes, as the days get longer, it starts to feel like Mother Nature has been saving up lots of energy for a big burst of activity. Hooray for your new furniture -- the more you're indoors on these chilly days, the more you get to enjoy it. And thanks for the reminder about making intentional choices; the more practice with that, the better.

  12. We haven't had snow yet but the days have definitely changed. Georgia has been in overcast mode for two weeks now. The sofa set is beautiful. You will never tire if it. I will check out the Knitmore girls. Frodo and Holly are cute, happy and healthy. Enjoy your day !

  13. Love the new furniture! No lull here, just rain, rain, a little freezing rain, and some more rain. I have noticed that it's staying light out longer now though. Oddly, I'm not ready for spring yet but I am looking forward to the longer days.

  14. Your new furniture is beautiful. I'm sure the animals will make it their own -- just give them time.
I have noticed how much longer the days are, and that makes me very happy! I love coming home and knitting after work in daylight.
My grandmothers were both very unhappy, difficult women. My goal in life is not to be them!

  15. Love your new furniture! Our days are longer here, too! And there's some talk of moving to permanent DST via legislation. Whatever, it's still chilly and gray, though, and we walked in a snow/rain shower earlier today.

  16. Your furniture is beautiful, I just love it. As for the serenity, I wish I had more. I think some people are just born with happy genes, my sister is like that, always laughing out loud. I am much more serious, no mater how hard I try I just am.

  18. I like your new couches and the gray color is nice. I am sure with time Holly and Frodo will warm up to them too. Great message about setting intentions and loved hearing about your cheerful grandmothers, they sounded lovely and we should all aspire to be like them and try to have a positive outlook. I too am excited for Spring to come and looking for signs and seeing some with the daylight and warmer temperatures. It is just around the corner :)

  19. Terrific set; love the light grey and the plush cushions! Love seeing Frodo as usual. I was curious...what litter brand do you use for Holly and what does her litter box look like? Want to file for future kittens.

    1. I use Cat's Pride frangrance free and I bought a large litter box with a lid at walmart. Nothing super special with the box.
