January Lull

There is something about January days that are delightful. The Christmas gift giving, planning, knitting and wrapping is completed. The house is undecorated from the holidays and clean spaces are everywhere where I look. The days are getting a little more daylight each day, do you notice that?

I continue to love watching the birds at my back yard feeder. Winter is glorious. After nearly a week, I am recovered from our trip to Cambridge MA. We have another winter storm brewing this weekend but I do not have to be anywhere important through most of it.

While up in Cambridge I started a pair of socks for my husband who was the only knit-worthy person who did not receive a Christmas hand knit. Better late than never, right? I am just making a plain pair that requires no thinking on my part. I am knitting on auto pilot.

I have been reading the Sister of Auschwitz during the day when my mind is fresh, it's really good. The other book Amaryllis in Blueberry is a really weird book, can't say I am in love with it but I will definitely finish it because of the bizarre plot, the reviews aren't that compelling either.

I did a bit of sketching and watercoloring yesterday, I am rusty but I know that if I show up daily my skills will return and so will my creativity.

  1. Those socks are very nice, and your knit-worthy husband definitely deserves a pair!

  2. That is a lovely sketch/painting. I like the simplicity of it. Knitting on auto pilot is a good thing. I am at the computer in my office...Mabel is on her shelf at the front window waiting for the birds to come to the window feeder. Then she will stand up and bang on the window! Just yesterday Fletch and I were mentioning the lengthening of the days. I always notice that in January.

  5. Nice socks for your hubby. I finished a pair of cotton bed socks for my hubby, he loves them. January for me is always slow but like up you noticing small changes. The sun is coming up earlier and setting a little later. I love this time of year and cherish the days, I’m not looking forward to summer heat.

  7. I'm sure DH will appreciate a new pair of snuggly socks whenever he gets them! I like the color.

I started a pair for Steve last night too and I was amazed how much I got done. The yarn is a heavier fingering weight that the purple pair and the needles just FLY!

  10. Your watercolour is beautiful. I love the colour of your yarn for your socks. I hope the winter storm is not too bad and glad to hear that you don't need to go anywhere this weekend. Home is a good place to be in storm.

  11. Love the sock! Good luck with the storm. We are expecting either 12 to 24 inches of snow... or just massive rain. They haven't decided yet. We've storm prepped though so it will probably just rain. Either way, it will make for good knitting weather. :)

  13. Enjoyed catching up with all you've been up to! (Is the daughter now in Cambridge MA the one who was in DE? I'm so glad you're able to see them!) Love the sweater you knit for your sister and can't wait to see what you cast on for yourself. Also, intrigued by your books - I haven't really heard of any of the titles you've shared this month; looking forward to your reviews. Wishing a warm and cozy weekend, Mary

  14. I've been enjoying January days, even thought I've been homebound for three weeks. Still, I'm getting a bit stir crazy.
I want to hear if the Sister Of Auschwitz book is too depressing.

  17. Lovely sketch. I have already had a DNF book and it's only January. Not finishing a book puts me in such a funk. I hope that book turns out better.

  19. No crazy weather here on the west coast, just low 60's and some wind. I have finished four books this year, one was from 2021 and that's because it was the Kindle book for the whole, fantasy trilogy. It was interesting as it was based upon Japanese culture and its mythology. Another book was a YA fantasy and loosely based in Japanese culture and it reminded me of the Seven Swans story in some ways, but this book the brothers had been turned into swans. A third book was about a reading list that ended up connecting a community and helping others in some ways. The last book was a cozy mystery about a family that owns a tea parlor and has Hungarian women who have the sight.
