These January Days

my work day
Hello!  Another week has come and almost gone.  I wish I could bottle up these January days and forever slow time down.

Every morning I wake up early and write in my journal and do my prayers.  I have full belief that every day is THE DAY I use my time wisely and eek out as much goodness from every minute.  Lunch time comes too quickly and yet again I'm sure I have more than enough time to read or get whatever tasks need to be completed.  Dinner time comes and goes and I realize that it's another day that I've frittered away time.  After dinner I knit and plot my next day.

I go to sleep, I wake up and repeat the thought process again.  Ordinarily one would think I'm a 'glass half full' kind of gal based on this behavior and I would agree that I truly truly believe I can do everything and anything I've conjured up on my daily list.

Here's the thing.  I love thinking of each day and it's possibilities and the hopefulness the mornings bring when I wake up.  I love mornings and the quiet welcoming of the day.

At the beginning of the year (two weeks ago?), I was talking to my son about my reading goal of four books in January.  He questioned my goal as if it was not possible.  So here I am, mid-January and I haven't finished one of the four books....yet.

Today was the day I rejiggered my schedule.  At one o'clock in the afternoon, I stopped everything, sat down and read for two hours, with some knitting of course.  Oh I wanted to check my phone a bazillion times but I kept saying to myself  I will be sabotaging my reading goal.

I probably will not be reading four books this month, however I will read two or three.

Have you heard yet that we might be getting a snow 'event'?  I'm excited.  I joined every other crazy person at the grocery store buying food.  As long as the electricity stays on,  let the snow fly!  We haven't had a significant snowfall since November.

On the knitting front my two projects are coming along nicely.  The sweater is growing and the sock is at the heel flap stage.  Super excited about both.   If it snows, I'll be knitting even more.

  1. Snow event is on the agenda in Pittsburgh too this weekend! Which sounds perfect to me for staying in and being a home body! I am glad I am not the only one who wonders at the end of the day - where did the day go! Have a good weekend! XO

  2. The phone checking! It's been killing me. Eating my knitting time. Eating all my time. Stupid Instagram (that I love so much).

The yoke on that sweater! Gah. Nice work, Karen. Nice work.

I also have a reading agenda but have been progressing horribly (like, one measly chapter at bedtime, if I am lucky). I am just so tired and my eyes drift shut so quickly. And that's that.

xoxo Stay warm in that snow!

  3. I've got my knitting and cross stitching all prepared just in case we get snowed in for awhile. Like you...I'll be happy as long as the power stays on.

  4. I love that first photo! It looks like nap time for the animals. I would be happy if the snow event was a small one. My MiL's service is on Sunday afternoon and I'd rather not drive through a foot of the "event" to get there.

  5. Enjoy your snow day. We have snow predicted for tomorrow although much of the time we get less than forecast. Your sweater looks great. I love how socks knit up. When I'm antsy with the cuff, I arrive at the heel flap and turn which make me feel smart. When I finish the gusset it seems like the foot and toe fly along.

  6. The snow came and disappeared just as quickly here. That said it was pretty while it lasted. Freight ferries have been cancelled this week due to the swell and weather conditions. I am always prepared for whatever the weather these days, it changes so quickly. Love the stunning colour mix of those socks.

  7. I am also most definitely a glass half full person who loves mornings. and making plans. (I do not, however, share your love of snow :-)

  8. We're supposed to get snow this weekend as well, but the forecast keeps changing as to whether we'll get a dusting or a few inches. Well done ignoring you phone and reading! I've been trying to intentionally read more this month, and I keep having to put my phone on the other side of the room so I don't give in to temptation!

  9. Oh goodness. So much of this resonates! I need to put my phone and laptop DOWN and KNIT! AND get back on track with my Bible reading!!! I use my Maginifcat a few times a week but still not daily, and need to be doing that, as well. Because I want to, not out of a sense of obligation. I am already thinking towards Lent and want to have good habits pre-established! Blessings! ~ Jill M.

  10. We are expecting snow (for the second weekend in a row) here in Illinois too. I'm all set for it with plenty of food, a good book, and my knitting. I hate to admit it, but I love a good snow day!

  11. I loved the peek into your home in this post, Karen. I love January days, too...with the exception of the really bright sunny days 'cause the sun shows that I'm not nearly as good at keeping the dust down as I'd like to be. :) I'm with you...if the electricity stays on let it snow! We have a genarator for which I am thankful but it is a noisy thing. I don't think we are in danger of needing it though.

  12. Nice pictures!! (The animals ARE napping - lol) I don't set any goals for knitting or reading - well maybe one goal for both: to just enjoy what I do. If I read one books in a month, that's fine. If I read 4, that's ok too. And knitting - I aim to keep it a meditative process and just relax. Enjoy your cozy weekend (WITH power please).

  13. I need to brave the grocery store today. Thankfully we are supposed to only get heavy, flooding rain, although the temperatures are going to drop into the teens as the rain pulls out. The rain will be rain as it falls but it's going to freeze on whatever it doesn't drip off of. Should be interesting. But it should also be an excellent excuse to stay curled up on the couch, knitting. Hope you keep your power!

  14. I am sorely disappointed, as here it sounds like our possible snow will just likely be excessive amounts of rain that will freeze in the cold temps. That's just not fair.

I find that anytime I can read and/or knit, I'm not really interested in anything online. It's a wonderful break for me.

  16. We may or may not get snow this weekend. I am hoping to spend some time cooking and cross-stitching. I am looking forward to being stuck in the house. Your sweater is very pretty and I really like those socks.

  17. Ooh, do you play? I've been bugging the husband to get our piano tuned because I'd like to play again. Yeah, I can't believe January is flying by.

  18. Hope you are not getting horrible snow, but just lovely large snowflakes drifting from the sky. Stay in and stay cozy, knit and read and drink some tea!
